West of Swanston St marks the beginning of the Bourke St Mall. This pedestrian mall unusually includes two tram tracks; don’t worry, they’ll ding if you get in the way. The mall is thick with the sounds of busking Peruvian bands, shop-front spruikers and the general hubbub from shoppers. The expansive entrances of the mall’s main department stores, Myer and David Jones , consume waves of eager shoppers. In a 60-year tradition, November to early January sees people lining up (sometimes for hours) to get a peek at the animated Christmas puppet show in the Myer windows.
