The convict-built bridge across the Elizabeth River here was completed in 1838, making it almost as venerable as the Ross Bridge. Locals call it the Red Bridge because it was built from more than 1.5 million red bricks, baked on site.
Other notable heritage structures around town include the 1835 St Luke’s Church of England ; the 1840 Campbell Town Inn ; the 1834 Fox Hunters Return (132 High St); the 1847 Grange , a mansion now used as a conference centre; and the 1878 old school in the current school’s grounds.
