Fremantle
Freestylin' Fremantle ('Freo') is Perth's laid-back little sister, an alternative, relaxed port city of cafes, funky shops, pastel-hued pubs and yachtie ambiance.
Visit the Old Fremantle Prison to hear tales of Freo's convict and bush-ranging past, then take in the seafaring history displayed by the port at the Maritime Museum. Visitors will see submarines, fishing boats and the America's Cup-winning yacht, Australia II. For more seagoing adventures, don't miss the Shipwrecks Galleries.
Popular walking trails wind their way through town, focusing on Fremantle's attractive pubs and heritage gold-rush-era buildings, with their Victorian stained-glass windows, balconies and columns. Pick up souvenirs and snacks at the famous Fremantle Markets, or save your appetite for a meal from one of Freo's alfresco cafes, seafood bistros or up-market restaurants.
Practical Info
Fremantle is 12 miles (19 km) southwest of central Perth, at the mouth of the Swan River on the Indian Ocean. Trains run from Perth to Fremantle every 10 minutes. You can also catch a bus, but perhaps the most carefree way to travel is by ferry from Barrack Street Jetty.
