Rottnest Island
If it's the weekend, it's time to get down to Rottnest Island, Perth locals' No. 1 island getaway.
Perfect for family holidays or a relaxing break right on Perth's doorstep, 'Rotto' is ringed by perfect beaches for swimming, fishing, boating and surfing. Cycling is also popular, as cars are banned here. Other than whiling away the day on your beach of choice, renting a bike and taking a cycling tour of the island's heritage buildings is another popular activity.
Visit the Rottnest Museum to learn the history of the island, take a stroll through the old cemetery or view the offshore reefs on a boat tour. While you’re here, see if you can spot a quokka – they're incredibly cute, cat-sized marsupials that look a bit like tiny wallabies.
