Hobart, Australia’s southernmost capital city in the country’s smallest state, sits at the mouth of the Derwent River -- the gateway for visitors to explore southern Australia. How to get to Hobart
When you step of your cruise ship, you’re practically in Hobart already. The charming waterfront Salamanca Square in downtown Hobart is less than 15 minutes away on foot, and if you don’t feel like walking, or if you’re heading a bit further afield, you’ll find taxis waiting at a designated point just outside the terminal. Hobart International Airport is located about 20 minutes from the city center and is accessible via taxi or the Airporter Shuttle Bus.

One Day in Hobart
The areas of Hobart that are of interest to visitors are compact enough that you can visit most of them within a single day. Walk along the harbor front to shop for merino wool and Aboriginal art before heading directly inland to Salamanca Place and Square, where you’ll find even more boutique stores and outdoor cafes if you’re feeling peckish. 
From Salamanca Place, head up Kelly’s Steps into the historic Battery Park neighborhood, where you can spend some time wandering the narrow lanes lined with colonial-era stone cottages.
If you want to learn more about Hobart’s maritime heritage, stop by the Maritime Museum of Tasmania. Art lovers should consider the Tasmanian Museum & Art Gallery for exhibits on classic and aboriginal art, or the quirky (and controversial) Museum for New and Old Art, accessible by ferry from the Brooke Street ferry terminal.
For the best views of Hobart on a clear day, catch the twice-daily shuttle from the Tasmanian Travel and Information Centre to the top of Mount Wellington. If you have the time to spare, enjoy the leisurely 2- to 3-hour walk back down from the top.

The official currency in Hobart is the Australian Dollar (AUD), and you’ll find ATMs at the tourist office and in Salamanca Place and Square. If you need to get online, many of the  cafes along the harbor front offer free WiFi with the purchase of food or drink.
