Silver City Mint & Art Centre
This is home to the Big Picture, an amazing 100m-by-12m diorama of the Broken Hill outback 鈥?the work of one painter, over two years. Its certainly impressive, but also pricey, and the $2.50 charge to simply enter the gallery (really an elaborate souvenir shop) is cheeky.

Katherine Low Level Nature Park
The park is a scenic spot on the banks of the babbling Katherine River, just off the Victoria Hwy (Rte 1) 4km from town. It has a popular dry-season swimming hole linked to crystalline thermal pools (access via Murray St) and town by a tree-lined shared cycle way/footpath .

Institute of Modern Art
The Institute of Modern Art in the Judith Wright Centre of Contemporary Arts is an excellent noncommercial gallery with an industrial vibe, and has regular showings by local names. With risqu茅, emerging and experimental art for grown-ups, it鈥檚 GOMA鈥檚 naughty little cousin.

Fitzroy Island Turtle Rehabilitation Centre
The Fitzroy Island Turtle Rehabilitation Centre looks after sick and injured sea turtles before releasing them back into the wild. Daily educational tours at 2pm (maximum 15 guests) visit the new turtle hospital. Bookings through the Fitzroy Island Resort are essential.

Cairns Tropical Zoo
This zoo offers an up-close wildlife experience with crocodiles and snakes, koala photo sessions and kangaroo feeding. Its Cairns Night Zoo experience includes a barbecue dinner and entertainment (adults $105, children $52.50). Transfers are available for an additional cost.

Blackmans Bay Beach
About 3km from Kingston, Blackmans Bay has a decent beach and a blowhole. The water is usually quite cold, and there鈥檚 rarely any surf鈥ut it sure is pretty! If you wander around the cliff base near the blowhole, theres a deep swimming gulch, with waves surging in and out.

Big Banana
Built in 1964 the Big Banana started the craze for 鈥楤ig Things鈥?in Australia. Admission is free, with charges for associated attractions such as ice skating, toboggan rides, minigolf, the waterpark, plantation tours and the irresistibly named World of Bananas Experience.

Ardyaloon (One Arm Point)
The community of Ardyaloon (One Arm Point) has a well-stocked store, fuel, great fishing and swimming with views of the Buccaneer Archipelago. Entry to the community (which includes hatchery visit) is payable at the trochus hatchery. Note: theres no camping in Ardyaloon.

This kid-friendly science centre has educational and fun interactive exhibits. Explore the physics of sport, athletics and fun parks, cause tsunamis, and take shelter from cyclones and earthquakes. Exciting science shows, presentations and puppet shows are all included.

Troubridge Island Conservation Park
From the clifftops at Edithburgh, views extend offshore to sandy Troubridge Island Conservation Park. You can stay the night at the Troubridge Island Lighthouse . It sleeps 10; BYO food and linen. The island is steadily eroding 鈭?what the sea wants, the sea will have鈥?

Jewish Holocaust Centre
Dedicated to the memory of the six million Jews who lost their lives during the Holocaust, this well-presented museum was set up by survivors as a sobering reminder to the atrocities they endured. Guided tours are available, often led by Holocaust survivors themselves.

Bare Island
About 50m offshore at La Perouse is the strange Bare Island, a decaying, grass-tussocked concrete fort built in 1885 to discourage a feared Russian invasion. A 45-minute guided tour is the only way to access the island, which is connected to the mainland by a wooden bridge.

Minnamurra Rainforest Centre
On the eastern edge of Budderoo National Park , about 14km inland from Kiama. A 1.6km loop walk transits through the rainforest following a cascading stream. Look out for water dragons and lyrebirds. A secondary 2.6km walk on a steepish track leads to the Minnamurra Falls .

Beagle Bay Church
Around 110km from Broome, Beagle Bay is notable for the extraordinarily beautiful mother-of-pearl altar at Beagle Bay church, built by Pallottine monks in 1918. Theres no accommodation, but fuel is available (weekdays only). Book ahead and proceed directly to the church.

Tamar Ridge
Tamar Ridge produces some of Tasmania鈥檚 best sparkling whites and pinots. Sip some at the counter, choose a bottle then hit the terrace for a platter (terrine, salmon or cheese, $20 to $25). The kids can spin hula hoops on the lawn, or scrawl on the blackboard wall.

Steam Exchange Brewery
Down on the wharf, the Steam Exchange Brewery is a locally run brewery, turning out stouts and ales. Sip a Southerly Buster Dark Ale and look out over the rippling river. And SAs only single malt whiskey distillery is here! Small tasting fee; group tours by arrangement.

Portland Cable Tram
This restored 1886 cable tram (now diesel-powered) does four trips a day, plying a 7.4km circular route on a track laid in 2002 that links the vintage-car museum , botanic gardens, Maritime Discovery Centre and WWII memorial water tower. Hop on and off as you please.

Kelp Industries鈥?Visitor Centre
Come here to find out why you see tractors gathering kelp on KI鈥檚 beaches. Glimpse the huge straps of bull kelp being air dried here. It鈥檚 exported to factories in Scotland and Norway, which extract alginates for use in products such as sauces, lotions and detergents.

Underground Hospital
With the threat of Japanese bombing raids in 1942, and a ready supply of miners and equipment, Mt Isa Hospital went underground. The bombs never came but the underground hospital was preserved. You can also see an example of a tent house, once common in Mt Isa, here.

Willows Museum & Ned Kelly Post Office
Some 92km east of Deniliquin and on the Newell Hwy, Jerilderie is immortalised by the bushranger Ned Kelly, who held up the whole town for three days in 1879. Kelly relics can be seen in Willows Museum & Ned Kelly Post Office . The town is 109km south of Narrandera.
