Circular Head Heritage Centre
For insights into Smithton鈥檚 pioneer days, visit the volunteer-run Circular Head Heritage Centre. Aside from some old photos, the most fascinating exhibit is the skeleton of the mysterious, giant-wombat-like Zygomaturus tasmanicum .

Cathermore
Balmain鈥檚 hibiscus-studded streets contain dozens of historically significant buildings, most of which are privately owned. Darling St has Cathermore, Balmain鈥檚 first bakery (1841), which later became the Waterford Arms pub.

Wendy Whiteleys Secret Garden
On the shore of Lavender Bay, this is one of Sydneys hidden treasures. The public garden was created by artist Brett Whiteleys widow (an artist herself) on an old railway siding and is accessed through Clark Park, off Lavender St.

Benalla Art Gallery
Across the lake, Benalla Art Gallery has a collection of Australian art, including paintings from the Heidelberg School, and a caf茅 that spreads onto a deck overlooking the lake. Outside is the very moving Weary Dunlop Memorial.

Auld Kirk
Arcing underneath the Batman Bridge on the western shore is a road leading to Sidmouth. Here the much-loved local institution is Auld Kirk 鈥?which means 鈥榦ld church鈥?鈥?built in 1843 from 鈥榝reestone鈥?by convict and free labour.

Fern Glade
Fern Glade is renowned as a top spot for platypus spotting at dawn and dusk. It鈥檚 east of the city centre: turn off the Bass Hwy on to Old Surrey Rd, just past the old Australian Paper Mill, then take Fern Glade Rd to the left.

Devil鈥檚 Corner
Just past the Great Oyster Bay lookout, Devil鈥檚 Corner is one of Tasmania鈥檚 largest vineyards, run by the estimable Brown Brothers company. The mod cellar door here overlooks Moulting Lagoon, beyond which is Freycinet Peninsula.

Maguk
This southern section of Kakadu National Park sees far fewer tour buses. Though its unlikely youll have dreamy Maguk to yourself, you might time it right to have the glorious natural pool and falls between just a few of you.

Seven Mile Beach
Long, lovely Seven Mile Beach starts at the township and stretches north. Theres 4WD access though you will need a permit from the Caltex Service Station. The best place for a dip is near the surf club, at the northern end of town.

Salt Store
A photographic exhibition in this 19th-century building looks at a different chapter of local history: when the islands salt lakes provided all of WAs salt (between 1838 and 1950). Its also the meeting point for walking tours.

Sunset Winery
Wow, what a view! If you cant make it up the steep driveway, theres another access around the back. Either way, expect brilliant sauvignon blanc and sparkling shiraz. Sunset also serves savoury platters to go with the panorama.

Slim Dusty Centre
This sleek building commemorates Australian icon and country music legend, Slim Dusty who was born in Kempsey. Unfortunately a decade after his death, the centre remains unfinished and without a link road from the Pacific Hwy bypass.

Railway Museum & Steam Train
Dating from 1889, the Railway Museum has a display on the Darwin-to-Pine Creek railway which ran from 1889 to 1976. The lovingly restored steam engine, built in Manchester in 1877, sits in its own enclosure next to the museum.

Tyto Wetlands
Tyto wetlands has been protected since 1996 and holds around 230 species of bird, including far-flung guests from Siberia and Japan. Twitchers love the 120-hectare site, and, like the birds, come from around the world to visit.

MB Historic Cellars
Old brewery paraphernalia is on display at MB Historic Cellars, a former brewery that now produces traditional cordials like ginger beer. In the same premises is the Carriage Museum , displaying gorgeous old horse-drawn carriages.

Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve
Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve is a lovely rainforest shelter spread over 55 hectares just out of town. Walking tracks snake through the rainforest and there鈥檚 a healthy population of bird life and unbearably cute pademelons.

Lavandula
Just north of Hepburn Springs , Lavandula is a Swiss-Italian farm and stone cottage where you can meet the farm animals, check out the gardens and produce, wander between lavender bushes and enjoy lunch in the Ticinese grotto.

Laurel Bank Park
Test your senses at the beautifully manicured Laurel Bank Park, which has a scented garden full of pungent herbs and blooms for the visually impaired. Is there anything more perfect than a patch of jonquils in the springtime?

Miners Cottage
A dusty collection of the town鈥檚 antiques can be seen at the wonderful, privately owned Miners Cottage , which caught a resident ghost on film. Staff here will play a few tunes on the accordion and teach you some gold-panning skills.
