Mammoth Cave
Mammoth Cave boasts a fossilised jawbone of Zygomaturus trilobus, a giant wombat-like creature, as well as other fossil remains and the impressive Mammoth Shawl formation. Visits are self-guided; an MP3 audio player is provided.

Immerse yourself in the subtropical surrounds of the greenhouses, sensory gardens and lush rainforest of these botanic gardens. The 8km Coffs Creek Walk passes by, starting at the pool on Coff St and finishing near the ocean.

A curiosity-arousing place to browse for local crafts (ceramics, paintings, knits) or grab a quick coffee. The Tasmanian timber furniture here fills the space with an amazing woody fragrance. Also sells Hastings Caves passes.

Dooragan National Park
Immediately north of Crowdy Bay National Park, on the shores of Watson Taylor Lake, this little park is dominated by North Brother Mountain. A sealed road leads to the lookout at the top, which offers incredible views of the coast.

Hope Cottage Museum
Built on the hill in 1857, this cottage is now a fastidiously maintained National Trust museum decked out in period style, with a reconstructed lighthouse, an amazing old quilt, a tiny walled rose garden and KIs first piano.

Home Hill Wines
In Ranelagh, 3km west of Huonville, is this super-stylish winery 鈥?all rammed-earth and corrugated iron 鈥?which has been collecting trophies for its pinot noir, chardonnay and dessert wines. There鈥檚 also a sassy restaurant here.

Bundaberg Barrel
Bundabergs nonalcoholic ginger beer and other soft drinks arent as famous as Bundy Rum, but they are very good. Visit the Barrel to take an audio tour of the small museum. Tastings are included and its geared to families.

Bluestone Bay & Whitewater Wall
There鈥檚 challenging climbing, views and a quiet camp site at Whitewater Wall . You may need a 4WD to reach it, but many 2WDs make it in (not your hire car!). Take your camera on the short walk to Bluestone Bay . Near Cape Tourville.

Australian Workers Heritage Centre
This centre is dedicated to Australian social, political and industrial movements, with a variety of permanent and changing exhibits celebrating working women, shearers, the formation of the Australian Workers Union and more.

Robert OHara Burke Museum
Burke Museum is named after the explorer Robert O鈥橦ara Burke, who was the police superintendent at Beechworth from 1854 to 1858. It shows gold-rush relics and an arcade of shopfronts preserved as they were over 140 years ago.

Wow! What a cool building, and what a setting! Camera-conducive views and contemporary varietals (viognier, pinot grigio, pinot gris), plus an outstanding restaurant (book for lunch). Tasting fee refundable if you buy a bottle.

Pipers Brook
The region鈥檚 most famous vineyard. Try Pipers Brook, Ninth Island and Krieglinger wines in an architecturally innovative building. Theres also a cafe, which serves a changing menu of light snacks and a delectable tasting plate.

Pioneer Museum
The Pioneer Museum recreates life in an 1880s homestead with displays of period pieces and local artefacts. John and Elizabeth Maley 鈥?and their 14 children 鈥?were the cottage鈥檚 original owners and early pioneers in the area.

Peter Lehmann Wines
The shiraz and riesling vintages here (oh, and semillon) are probably the most consistent, affordable and widely distributed wines in the Barossa. Peter Lehmann passed away in 2013: pay your respects with a cellar door visit!

Quay Street
In town, wander down this historic streetscape, with its grand sandstone Victorian-era buildings dating back to the gold-rush days. You can pick up leaflets that map out walking trails around Rockhampton from the visitor centres.

Leven Canyon Lookout
South of Gunns Plains, the River Leven stutters through a 274m-deep gorge. Follow the 41km road from Ulverstone through Nietta to the jaw-dropping Leven Canyon Lookout. A 20-minute return track leads to a gorge-top viewing platform.

National Automobile Museum of Tasmania
Revheads get all revved up over the displays here 鈥?one of Australia鈥檚 slickest presentations of classic and historic cars and motorbikes, all privately owned. The saucy 1969 Corvette Stingray will burn tyre tracks into your retinas.

Thredbo Ski Museum
More a museum of the Snowy Mountains than a specifically ski-oriented museum, this little collection is nonetheles fascinating and a nice alternative to more active pursuits. Its at the northern end of the Thredbo Alpine Hotel.

Pikes
The industrious Pike family set up shop in 1984, and have been producing show-stopping riesling ever since (and shiraz, sangiovese, pino grigio, viognier鈥?. It also bottles up the zingy Oakbank Pilsener, if youre parched.

Kangaroo Island Farmers Market
Baked goods, chutneys, seafood, olive oil, honey, eggs, cheese, yogurt鈥nd of course buskers and wine! Sealink offers dedicated passenger-only return tickets from the mainland if youd just like to visit the market for the day.
