Mt Lofty Summit Visitor Information Centre
Mount Lofty Summit visitors centre has oodles of info on local attractions and walking tracks, including the steep Waterfall Gully Track (8km return, 2陆 hours) and Mt Lofty Botanic Gardens Loop Trail (7km loop, two hours).

Great Aussie Beer Shed
This is a wall-to-wall shrine of over 17,000 beer cans in a huge shed. It鈥檚 the result of 30 years of collecting 鈥?one dates back to Federation. Guided tours will take you through the history of beer. Very Aussie.

Dinosaur World
Replica dinosaur skeletons and information boards have been added to spice up this bird and reptile park, off the South Coast Hwy at Bow Bridge. Kangaroos, lizards and snakes feature, but the parrots are the real stars.

Djurri Dadagal Art Enterprises
Many of the authentic paintings, artefacts, screen prints and textiles at this central Indigenous art cooperative run by community leader and proprietor Wanegan (Glenis Grogan) are produced on site by local artists.

Gaiety Theatre
Admission to the West Coast Pioneers Memorial Museum includes access to the magnificently restored, 1000-seat Gaiety Theatre ; when it opened in 1898 it was one of the largest, most opulent and modern theatres in the world.

Coolangatta Estate
On the north side of the estuary, just before Shoalhaven Heads, is Historic Coolangatta Estate Winery, a slick winery with a golf course, a good restaurant open for lunch and accommodation in convict-built buildings.

Commonwealth Bank branch
The Commonwealth Bank has taken over the old State Savings Bank building: it鈥檚 a beaut example of interwar beaux-arts architecture, featuring green-marble Ionian columns and an enclosed brass-and-marble teller area.

Canyon Lookout
Canyon Lookout affords jagged views through the valley all the way to Surfers Paradise. This is also the start of a 4km circuit walk to Twin Falls , which is part of Springbrooks longest trail, the 17km Warrie Circuit .

Beerenberg Strawberry Farm
Pick your own strawberries between November and May from this famous, family-run farm, also big-noted for its myriad jams, chutneys and sauces. Last entry for picking 4.15pm; open til 8.30pm Fridays in December and January.

Arno鈥檚 Wall
Arno鈥檚 Wall is one of Winton鈥檚 quirky outback attractions 鈥?a 70m-long work-in-progress by artist Arno Grotjahn, featuring a huge range of industrial and household items, from TVs to motorcycles, ensnared in mortar.

Albany Convict Gaol
The old jail was built in 1851 as a hiring depot for ticket-of-leave convicts, but by 1855 most were in private employment. In 1872 the building was extended and reopened as a civil gaol, and is now a folk museum.

Island Beehive
Runs factory tours where you can study up on passive, hard-working Ligurian bees and beekeeping, then stock up on by-products (bee-products?) including delicious organic honey and honeycomb ice cream. Tours for groups.

Cape Schanck Lighthouse
Cape Schanck Lightstation, built in 1859, is a photogenic working limestone lighthouse, with a kiosk, museum, information centre and regular guided tours. You can stay in the old lightkeeper鈥檚 cottages from $130 a night.

Geikie Gorge
Dont miss this magnificent gorge near Fitzroy Crossing. The self-guided trails are sandy and hot, so take one of the informative boat cruises run by either Department of Parks & Wildlife or local Bunuba guides.

Furneaux Museum
The grounds around the Furneaux Museum are strewn with whalebones, blubber pots and rusty wrecks. Inside are Aboriginal artefacts (including beautiful shell necklaces), plus sealing, sailing and mutton-bird industry relics.

Old Umbrella Shop
Launcestonians once kept dry under the umbrellas made here by R Shott & Sons. Now the shop stands as a rare example of an intact early-20th-century store, complete with its original till and blackwood display cases.

Old Hobart Town Historical Model Village
A painstaking re-creation of Hobart Town in the 1820s, built from the city鈥檚 original plans 鈥?the kids will love it. Admission is a bit steep, but its actually pretty amazing, with some solid historical insights.

Mengler Hill Lookout
From Tanunda, take the scenic route to Angaston via Bethany for hazy valley views (just ignore the naff sculptures in the foreground). The road tracks through beautiful rural country, studded with huge eucalyptuses.

Logans Beach Whale
Southern right whales come to mate and nurse their bubs in the waters off Logans Beach from July to September, breaching and fluking off the platform. Its a major tourist drawcard, but sightings are not guaranteed.

Swanbourne Beach
Safe swimming, and an unofficial nude and gay beach. From Grant St train station its a 1.5km walk to the beach (2km from Swanbourne station). Catch bus 102 from Wellington St station and get off at Marine Parade.
