Goat Island

This modern museum has multimedia exhibits, a flight simulator and informative displays chronicling the life of Bundaberg鈥檚 famous son Bert Hinkler, who made the first solo flight between England and Australia in 1928.

Castlemaine Botanical Gardens
These majestic gardens, one of the oldest in Victoria (established 1860), strike a perfect balance between sculpture and wild bush among awe-inspiring National Trust鈥搑egistered trees and the artificial Lake Joanna.

Calgardup Cave
Calgardup Cave has a seasonal underground lake and is an attractive illustration of the role of the caves in the ecosystem 鈥?a stream transports nutrients to the creatures living in the cave, while tree roots hang overhead.

Army Museum Bandiana
The Army Museum Bandiana displays a variety of war weaponry, items from missions, and documents. The old cars are magnificent. There鈥檚 Buick and Holden staff cars, Chevrolet and Dodge trucks, carriages, motorbikes.

Spring Gully Conservation Park
About 3km southwest of Sevenhill, the 400-hectare Spring Gully Conservation Park features blue-gum forest, red stringybarks and 18m-high winter waterfalls. There are plenty of bird twitters, critters and trails too.

Utopian Slumps
One of the newest nonprofit art spaces, the Slumps has a recherch茅 backstreet location and loads of attitude. Installation is king here, plus the gallery hosts dance parties and other events; check the website for details.

Scarborough Beach
Popular young surfers spot, so be sure to swim between flags as it can be dangerous. There are also lots of shops and eateries. Catch a Joondalup line train from Esplanade to Stirling, and then bus 421 to the beach.

Roundhouse Railway Museum
Built in 1947, the Railway Roundhouse , a giant turntable with 42 train-repair bays, is the only surviving, working one of its kind in Australia. Railway enthusiasts should visit the Roundhouse Museum in the same complex.

Koala Care Centre
This worthy centre takes in sick, injured and orphaned koalas; visits are only possible by guided tour at the designated times. To see koalas in the wild, head to Robinson鈥檚 Lookout , immediately south of the town centre.

Kyneton Historical Museum
The old bank building (1855) is now Kyneton Historical Museum, housing a display of local history items 鈥?the upper floor is furnished in period style. The building itself is perhaps more interesting than the exhibits.

Laarri Gallery
This tiny not-for-profit gallery in the back of the community school has interesting contemporary-style art detailing local history. Its 120km west of Halls Creek and 5km from the Great Northern Hwy. Phone ahead.

WhiteWater World
This park features the Cave of Waves, Pipeline Plunge and more than 140 water activities and slides. A 1-day World Pass (adult/child online $95/85, gate $105/95) ensures entry to both Dreamworld and WhiteWater World.

Royal Australian Mint
The Royal Australian Mint is Australia鈥檚 biggest money-making operation. Its gallery showcases the history of Australian coinage; here you can learn about the 1813 鈥榟oley dollar鈥?and its enigmatic offspring, the 鈥榙ump鈥?

Roto House
This beautifully preserved late Victorian weatherboard villa was built by surveyor John Flynn in 1891 and was occupied by his family right up until 1979. The enthusiastic volunteers will happily give you a guided tour.

QDeck
Surfers鈥?sights are usually spread across beach towels but for a spectacular 360-degree panorama of the Gold Coast and hinterland zip up to the QDeck. On a clear day you can see north to Brisbane and south to Byron Bay.

Watch Norms Coolie sheepdogs go through their paces at the Breezy Gully Farm. This show is unmissable, especially once you realise that this army of trained collies may be smarter and more alluring than their audience.

NSW Department of Corrective Services Museum
Next to functioning Cooma Gaol is the new NSW Department of Corrective Services Museum exhibiting artefacts from convict time through to the present prison system. Inmates conduct tours and sell their art and craft.
