Cliffords Honey Farm
Its almost worth swimming the Backstairs Passage for the honey ice cream (sourced from a colony of rare Ligurian bees) at this charming, uncommercial farm. A bit off the tourist radar (again, charming).

Billabong Koala & Wildlife Park
Time your visit for the 鈥榢oala patting鈥?(10.30am, 1.30pm and 3.30pm) at the parks koala-breeding centre. There are heaps of other Australian critters as well as monkeys, meerkats and endangered snow leopards.

Beechworth Courthouse
The Beechworth Courthouse is notable for Ned Kelly鈥檚 first court appearance. See the cell where Ned was held in the basement behind the Shire Hall. Behind the courthouse is the Old Police Station Museum .

Ballarat Tramway Museum
This tram operates on a short section of tramline around Lake Wendouree, departing from the Tram Museum. Horsedrawn trams started running in the city in 1887, later replaced by electric trams until 1971.

WetnWild Sydney
The famous Gold Coast theme park has opened in Sydney with more than 40 slides, including a 360-degree loop slide that hits speeds of up to 60km/h. At the heart of the park is Australias largest wave pool.

Walhalla Historical Museum
Located in the old post office in the group of restored shops along the main street, Walhalla Historical Museum also acts as an information centre and books the popular two-hour ghost tours on Saturday nights.

Wadlata Outback Centre
The highlight at this combined museum/visitor centre is the Tunnel of Time, which traces local Aboriginal and European histories using audio-visual displays, interactive exhibits and a distressingly big snake.

St Hallett
Using only Barossa grapes, improving St Hallet produces reasonably priced but consistently good whites (try the Poacher鈥檚 Blend) and the excellent Old Block Shiraz. Unpretentious and great value for money.

Penguin Market
The popular undercover Penguin Market takes place every Sunday off Arnold St. Stalls sell fresh local produce, art and crafts, gifts and collectables, although the gourmet food stalls arent what they used to be.

Jansz Wine Room
Next door to Pipers Brook, savvy Jansz (named after explorer Abel Jansz Tasman) makes fine sparkling wine, aka 鈥楳茅thode Tasmanoise鈥?(ha ha). A cheese platter plus two flutes of the sparking stuff is $30.

Goodieson Brewery
There sure are a lot of wineries around here鈥?Anyone for a beer? This family-run outfit brews a pale ale, pilsner, wheat beer and brown ale, plus brilliant seasonal beers. Sip a few on the sunny terrace.

dArrys relaxes atop a hillside with mighty fine views. The wine labels are part of the character of this place: the Dead Arm shiraz and the Broken Fishplate sauvignon blanc are our faves. Book for lunch.

Karrs Reef Goldmine
Karrs Reef Goldmine dates from 1857. On the 1陆-hour guided tour you don a hard hat and descend into the original tunnels to learn a bit about the mine鈥檚 history. Bookings can be made through the visitor centre.

Tanks Arts Centre
Three gigantic, ex-WWII fuel-storage tanks have been transformed into local galleries and an inspired performing-arts venue. Lively market days are held here on the last Sunday of the month (April to November).

Science Centre & Planetarium
Quizzical kids of all ages can indulge their senses here. It鈥檚 operated by the University of Wollongong and covers everything from dinosaurs to electronics. Planetarium shows ($4) run throughout the day.

Jetty
Check out King Sounds colossal 11.5m tides from the circular jetty, 1km north of town, a popular fishing, crabbing, bird-spotting and staring-into-the-distance haunt. Yep, there are crocs in the mangroves.

Kershaw Gardens
Just north of the Fitzroy River, this excellent botanical park is devoted to Australian native plants. Its attractions include artificial rapids, a rainforest area, a fragrant garden and heritage architecture.

Kanawinka Geopark
Hidden beneath the surface of the Limestone Coast is a bizarre subterranean landscape of limestone caves, sinkholes and bottomless crater lakes 鈥?a broad, formerly volcanic area that now comprises this geopark.

Wild at Hart Fresh Food Market
Skip the trashy mainstream market on the wharf: this one is a much better bet, with organic produce, buskers, home-cooked meals, baked goods, coffee and a great vibe. Love the old Harts Mill buildings, too.
