Federation Pavilion
Among the wide formal avenues of Centennial Park is the domed Federation Pavilion 鈥?the spot where Australia was officially proclaimed a nation (on 1 January 1901) 鈥?surrounded by the various state flags.

Chapman River Wines
Occupying a converted aircraft hangar, this eccentric winery makes a mean shiraz. The interior is festooned with art and quirky bits of salvage from churches, pubs and homesteads from around SA. Good coffee, too.

A Special Place for Jimmy James
A short amble from the visitor centre, this living riverbank memorial honours an Aboriginal tracker who could read the bush like a newspaper. Whimsical tracks and traces are scattered around granite boulders.

Archers Folly
On the hill behind historic Carrick Mill are the crumbling ruins of an 1847 mansion, known as Archers Folly. Standing in gorgeous gothic isolation, it was once a grand merchants home, but burned down in 1978.

Wetside Water Education Park
On hot days, this wet spot on the foreshore cant be beaten. There鈥檚 plenty of shade, fountains, tipping buckets and a boardwalk with water infotainment. Opening hours vary so check the website for updates.

Lady Denman Heritage Complex
With a historic collection, the 1912 Lady Denman ferry and Timbery鈥檚 Aboriginal Arts & Crafts gallery and shop. Theres a growers market on the first Saturday of the month, and a visitor information centre.

Penfolds
You know the name: Penfolds is a Barossa institution. Book ahead for the Make Your Own Blend tour ($65), or the Taste of Grange tour ($150), which allows you to slide some Grange Hermitage across your lips.

Queens Park Gardens
These immaculate botanical gardens occupy the northeast corner of Queens Park, and blaze with colour in autumn. Plenty of parterre gardens, neat English flower beds, palms, conifers and canoodling teenagers.

La Perouse Museum
Housed inside the old cable station (1882), this museum has relics from French explorer La P茅rouse鈥檚 many expeditions, an interesting Aboriginal gallery and changing exhibitions on local history and environment.

Whiteman Park
Located in Caversham in West Swan, at 26 sq km this is Perths biggest park, with over 30km of walkways and bike paths, and numerous picnic and barbecue spots. There are also train and tram rides for the kids.

Sevenhill Cellars
Want some religion with your drink? This place was established by Jesuits in 1851, making it the oldest winery in the Clare Valley (check out the incredible 1866 St Aloysius Church). Oh, and the wine is fine too!

Pulpit Rock Lookout
For camera-conducive views over New Norfolk and a sweeping Derwent River bend, take the road along the northern side of the river eastward for 1km, then up a steep, unsealed side road to this ace lookout.

Salamanca Arts Centre
The non-profit Salamanca Arts Centre occupies seven Salamanca warehouses and is home to 75-plus arts organisations and individuals, including shops, galleries, studios, performing arts venues and public spaces.

TreeTop Adventure Park
Zip fast and furious through the canopy of the Ourimbah State Forest at this high-thrills adventure park which features over 100 challenging courses including the worlds longest roller coaster zip line.

Top Didj Cultural Experience & Art Gallery
Run by the owners of the Katherine Art Gallery, Top Didj is a good place to see Aboriginal artists at work. The cultural experience is hands on with fire sticks, spear throwing, painting and basket weaving.

Middle Lagoon
Middle Lagoon, 180km from Broome and surrounded by empty beaches, is superb for swimming, snorkelling, fishing and well, doing nothing. Theres plenty of shade and bird life, and the cabins are great value.

Hadfields Rod Museum
If youre into hot rods and custom cars, take a trip out to the shop about 7km east of town in Chewton. The big green shed contains around 20 custom-built vehicles and drag racers. Call ahead to check its open.

Dogwood Crossing
On the main street in Miles is Dogwood Crossing , a $1.6 million community project that combines visual arts, social history and literature into a museum, gallery, library and multimedia resource centre.

Jan Powers Farmers Market
Get along to this beaut farmers market (an offshoot of the Brisbane market of the same name), down by the shore at Manly. Expect loads of fresh produce, cakes, breads, olive oil, seafood, meats, honey, jam鈥?

Everglades Historic House & Gardens
National Trust鈥搊wned Everglades was built in the 1930s. While the house is moderately interesting, the magnificent 12 acres of garden created by Danish 鈥榤aster gardener鈥?Paul Sorenson are the real drawcard.
