Beachport Conservation Park
There are some great walking tracks in this 710-hectare park, sandwiched between the coast and Lake George 2km north of town. Aboriginal middens, sheltered coves, lagoons and bush camping (per person/car $7/13).

Murphys Haystacks
A few kilometres down the Point Labatt road are the globular Murphys Haystacks, an improbable congregation of inselbergs 鈭?colourful, weather-sculpted granite outcrops, which are millions of years old.

Old Farm at Strawberry Hill
National Trust鈥搊wned Strawberry Hill is one of the oldest farms in WA, established in 1827 as the towns government farm. The homestead (1836) features antiques and artefacts that belonged to the original owner.

Old Silverton Gaol
The 1889 Silverton Gaol once housed 14 cells. Today the museum is a real treasure chest: room after room is crammed full of a century of local life (wedding dresses, typewrites, mining equipment, photos).

Mutonia
About 60km from Marree there鈥檚 a sculpture park called Mutonia , featuring a gate made from a Kombi van cut in half and several planes welded together with their tails buried in the ground to form 鈥楶lanehenge鈥?

City of Adelaide
Wander down to the end of Divett St for a look (through the fence) at the oldest clipper ship in the world (1864). The high-and-dry hulk of the City of Adelaide was transported here from Scotland in 2013.

Charles Darwin National Park
Charles Darwin National Park protects places of natural and cultural importance including part of Port Darwin wetland, one of the countrys most significant wetland areas. Park available for day use only.

Jam Factory Contemporary Craft & Design Centre
Quality contemporary local arts and crafts, plus workshops and a hellishly hot glass-blowing studio (watch from the balcony above) turning out gorgeous glass. Group tours (six or more people) by arrangement.

Currency Creek Winery
Currency Creek Winery has 160 acres under vine (brilliant cabernet sauvignon) plus a fab restaurant (mains $26 to $30, open noon to 3pm Wednesday to Sunday and 6pm to 9pm Friday and Saturday). Bookings advised.

Art deco enthusiasts will love Mackay鈥檚 CBD. Most of the facades are at their finest on the second storey. Noteworthy examples include the Mackay Townhouse Motel , the Australian Hotel and the Ambassador Hotel .

Manly Cove
Split in two by Manly Wharf, this sheltered enclave has shark nets and calm water, making it a popular choice for families with toddlers. Despite the busy location, the clear waters have plenty of appeal.

Lincoln National Park
Lincoln National Park is about 15km south of Port Lincoln. Youll find roaming emus, roos and brush-tailed bettongs, safe swimming coves and pounding surf beaches. Entry is via self-registration on the way in.

Tenterfield Saddler
This bluestone building opened as a saddlery in 1870 and was celebrated by Peter Allen in his well-known song (written for his grandfather who was a saddler here for 50 years). Its still open for business.

Echidna Chasm
Look for tiny bats high on the walls above this palm-fringed, narrow gorge in the northern park. The trail leaves from the Echidna Chasm car park and is marked on the park map available from the rangers office.

Darlington Vineyard
Just off the highway opposite the service station is Darlington Vineyard , the most southerly of the east-coast wineries, producing quaffable riesling. The simple cellar door is open for tastings and sales.

Delamere Vineyards
Affable, family-run Delamere is the antithesis of the big-ticket wineries around here. Its a small set-up, with everything grown, produced and bottled on site. Superb ros茅, sparkling white and pinot noir.

Freycinet Vineyard
The Bull family has been growing grapes neath the east-coast sun since 1980 鈥?it was the first vineyard on the coast. The vibe at the cellar door is agricultural, not flashy 鈥?we like it! Super sauvignon blanc.
