Apex Beach
About 3km northwest of the centre, with a sandy river beach on the Murray, is this popular swimming and picnic spot. There鈥檚 a good walking and cycling track from here to the Old Mildura Homestead.

The excellent community-managed and volunteer-run Yongergnow Malleefowl Centre is in Ongerup, about 50km north of the Mount Trio Bush Camping & Caravan Park 鈥?check opening hours before visiting.

Yass & District Museum
The Yass & District Museum is next door to the Yass Valley visitor centre. It has a model reconstruction of the town in the 1890s 鈥?check at the visitors centre for off-season opening hours.

World Peace Bell
Audio at this outdoor site explains the background and significance of the World Peace Bell. Its a replica of the bell that stands outside the United Nations, and the only one of its kind in Australia.

Warlayirti Artists Centre
This centre 255km down the Tanami Track is a conduit for artists around the area and features bright acrylic dot-style works as well as lithographs and glass. Phone first to arrange an entry permit.

St Imre Vineyard
Bottling pinot noir, chardonnay, pinot gris and the robust 鈥楾iger Blood鈥? this compact hillside vineyard has a fabulous timber tasting room, built by the Hungarian owner. Crumpuss the cat is on duty.

Movie World
Movie-themed shows, rides and attractions, including the Batwing Spaceshot, Justice League 3D Ride and Scooby-Doo Spooky Coaster. Batman, Austin Powers, Porky Pig et al roam through the crowds.

Maritime Museum of Townsville
One for the boat buffs, with a gallery dedicated to the wreck of the Yongala and exhibits on North Queensland鈥檚 naval industries. Tours of decommissioned patrol boat HMAS Townsville are available.

WetnWild
The ultimate water slide here is the Kamikaze, where you plunge down an 11m drop in a two-person tube at 50km/h. This vast water park also has pitch-black slides, white-water rapids and wave pools.

Vlaminghs Lookout
Not far away from Thomson Bay (go up past the old European cemetery), this unsigned vantage point offers panoramic views of the island, including its salt lakes. Its on View Hill, off Digby Dr.

National Rhododendron Gardens
Giant eucalypts tower over shady lawns and brilliant flowerbeds at these gardens with over 15,000 rhododendrons and 12,000 azaleas. The best time to see the rhododendrons is September to November.

Old Cable Station Museum
Here鈥檚 a huge collection of photographs and local artefacts relating to the 1859 laying of submarine telegraph cable from Cape Otway to Tasmania. It鈥檚 a tad old-school, but pleasant all the same.

Tempus Two
This sprawling complex is a favourite with tour buses which descend upon the cellar door, Japanese restaurant and Smelly Cheese Shop . Meerea Park has a tasting room here, which is worth seeking out.

Trentham Falls
Just a short drive from the Trentham is one of Victorias highest single drop waterfall. Situated in the Wombat State Forest, the Coliban River cascades 32m over a sheer face of basalt rock.

Mikkira Station & Koala Sanctuary
Mikkira Station & Koala Sanctuary is Eyre Peninsula鈥檚 first sheep station and is also home to the endemic Port Lincoln parrot. Permits to this station can be purchased from the visitors centre.

Perry Sand Hills
Around 6km north of town (signposted off the Broken Hill and then Renmark roads), these low orange sand dunes date back 40,000 years. They are at their best (and most photogenic) at sunset or sunrise.

Kooloonbung Creek Nature Park
Encompassing 50 hectares of bush and wetland, this park is home to many bird species. A series of walking trails and wheelchair-accessible boardwalks heads through mangroves and casuarina forest.

Goomoolahra Falls
At the end of Springbrook Rd there鈥檚 a superb lookout beside the 60m Goomoolahra Falls, with views across the plateau and all the way back to the coast. Theres a creek-side picnic area here, too.

Gladstone Art Gallery & Museum
In the old town hall, the Gladstone Art Gallery & Museum has a small, permanent collection of contemporary Australian paintings and ceramics, and regularly features visiting theme exhibitions.

Farmers Market
The monthly farmers market, held right by the river, is a local highlight, with everything from rabbits to roses to organic milk hoisted into baskets.
