Echuca Historical Museum
This historical museum is located in the old police station, classified by the National Trust. It has a collection of local history items, charts and photos from the riverboat era and early records.

Djilpin Arts
This Katherine gallery is Aboriginal owned and represents art from the Ghunmarn Culture Centre in the remote community of Beswick. Exhibits include paintings, weavings and termite-bored didgeridoos.

Devonport Maritime Museum
This museum is in the former harbour-masters residence (c 1920) and pilot station near the foreshore. It has model boats from the ages of sail through steam to the present seagoing passenger ferries.

Wooroonooran National Park
The Palmerston (Doongan) section of Wooroonooran National Park is home to some of the oldest continually surviving rainforest in Australia; NPRSR has details of campgrounds and walking trails.

Watch House
Balmain鈥檚 frangipani-scented streets contain dozens of historically significant buildings, most of which are privately owned. Darling St has the Watch House, Sydney鈥檚 oldest surviving lockup (1854).

Unavale Vineyard
The island鈥檚 only vineyard produces a decent sauvignon blanc. Everything is done on-site, right down to the labels. Roll up for a tasting at the cellar door 鈥?call first to make sure someone is around.

Linden Arts Centre & Gallery
Housed in a wrought iron鈥揷lad 1870s mansion, Linden champions the work of emerging artists. The annual postcard show, which coincides with the St Kilda festival in February/March, is a highlight.

Lady Nelson Discovery Centre
The Lady Nelson Discovery Centre features a replica of the historic brig Lady Nelson (which sailed past in 1800 and gave the town its name) and displays on geology, wetlands and indigenous history.

Toondoon Botanic Gardens
More than 80 hectares of rainforest, lakes and Australian native plants. There鈥檚 a visitor centre, an orchid house, and free guided tours between February and November. About 7km south of town.

Surfworld Australia Surfing Museum
Next to the visitor centre, Surfworld Australia Surfing Museum is a must for would-be waxheads with boards through the ages, a board-shaping workshop and plenty of footage of mountainous waves.

Smoky Cape Lighthouse
Southeast of South West Rocks, this lighthouse, perched high above the ocean on a bracingly breezy cape, is a landmark that shouldn鈥檛 be missed. Phone ahead for tours. It also has accommodation.

Theatre Royal
Take a backstage tour of Hobart鈥檚 prestigious Theatre Royal. Host to bombastic thespians since 1834, and despite a major fire in 1984, it remains Australia鈥檚 oldest continuously operating theatre.

Morton National Park
Morton National Park features the deep gorges and high sandstone plateaus of the Budawang Range and includes the 81m-high Fitzroy Falls. The NPWS visitor centre has information on walking and hiking.

Thredbo Landslide Memorial
This memorial can be seen along Bobuck Lane where the two lodges, Carinya and Bimbadeen, were destroyed in a 1997 landslide. The 18 posts supporting the platform signify the 18 lives tragically lost.

John Forrest National Park
The 16-sq-km John Forrest National Park, west of Mundaring, was the states first national park. Protected areas of jarrah and marri trees are scattered about granite outcrops, waterfalls and a pool.

Elsey Station Homestead
Outside the Mataranka Homestead Resort entrance is a replica of the Elsey Station Homestead, constructed for the filming of We of the Never Never, which is screened daily at noon in the resort bar.

Bridge Hotel
At the Bridge Hotel , built by Harry Hopwood in 1859, your ticket admits you to a historic upstairs re-creation of a 19th-century home. Downstairs the Bridge is a pub, restaurant and coffee shop.

Brig Amity
This full-scale replica of the brig that carried Albanys first British settlers from Sydney in 1826 was completed for the citys 150th anniversary. Around the brig is a heritage area worth exploring.

Belongil Beach
West of the town centre, wild Belongil Beach with its high dunes avoids the worst of the crowds and is clothing optional in parts. At its eastern end is the Wreck , a powerful right-hand surf break.

Australian Reptile Park
Thirteen kilometres west of Gosford you can get acquainted with lizards, snakes and crocodiles at the Australian Reptile Park , and less toothy beasts such as koalas, platypuses and kangaroos.
