James Cook Museum
Cooktown鈥檚 finest building (an 1899 convent) houses well-preserved relics including journal entries, the cannon and anchor from the Endeavour , and displays on local Indigenous culture.

Aboriginal Cultural Centre & Keeping Place
Down the road from the Regional Art Museum, this centre will broaden your perception of Indigenous art. Theres a small sweet cafe here serving up some imaginative examples of bush tucker.

Built in 1823, St Matthew鈥檚 is Tasmania鈥檚 oldest church. It鈥檚 been extensively altered since it first rose from the ground 鈥?its best features today are some impressive stained-glass windows.

Eagles Heritage
Housing Australias largest collection of raptors, this centre, 5km south of Margaret River, rehabilitates many birds of prey each year. There are free-flight displays at 11am and 1.30pm.

Maryborough Military & Colonial Museum
Check out the only surviving three-wheeler Girling car, originally built in London in 1911. There鈥檚 also a replica Cobb & Co coach and one of the largest military libraries in Australia.

Mackay Regional Botanical Gardens
On 33 hectares, 3km south of the city centre, these gardens are a must-see for flora fans. Home to five themed gardens and the Lagoon cafe/restaurant (open 9am to 4pm Wednesday to Sunday).

Tacking Point Lighthouse
This little lighthouse (1879) commands a headland offering immense views along the coast. It鈥檚 a great spot from which to watch the waves rolling in to long, beautiful Lighthouse Beach.

St Thomas Anglican Church
This 1824 convict-built church is one of Australia鈥檚 oldest still-functioning churches. It still has its box pews and crenulated tower, aping the Norman churches of southern England.

Stockyard Gully Caves
If you have a 4WD, Stockyard Gully Caves are 30km away, off the Coorow Green Head Rd, and you can explore the underground creek and caverns with a torch. Watch out for bees and bats.

Stone House Museum
The Stone House has sheds full of outback stuff, space junk, local history and Aboriginal artefacts. Theres also the preserved 1888 home of the pioneering Jones family 鈥?the Stone House.

St Michael鈥檚 Uniting Church
Facing each other on the corners of Russell and Collins Sts are the 1873 decorative Gothic Scots Church and the 1866 St Michael鈥檚 Uniting Church , built in the Lombardic Romanesque style.

Umbarra Cultural Centre
Visit Umbarra Cultural Centre , run by the Yuin people from the Wallaga Lake Koori community. It is 3km from the highway towards Wallaga Lake, a worthy scenic drive in its own right.

Thankakali Art Gallery
Thankakali Art Gallery is the Aboriginal cultural centre, located in an old brewery. It has an extensive gallery and a range of hand-painted arts, crafts and didgeridoos by local artists.

Market in the Mountains
Follow the locals into the Civic Centre for a Sunday morning artsy-craftsy hit: lots of hand-made trinkets, plus coffee, fresh local produce and the odd busker (鈥ometimes very odd).

Loftus on Humphreys
Loftus on Humphreys, a surprisingly upmarket restaurant, bar and cafe, is downstairs from the B&B and run by the same hard-working people. The dinner menu includes roo wrapped in bacon!

Livestock Sales
Wagga is a major centre for livestock sales; you can watch farmers sell cattle on Monday (7am to around noon) in an amphitheatre-style ring, and sheep by the thousands on Thursday (from 8am).
