Yellow Water Wetlands
A very popular wetlands near Cooinda. The turn-off to the Cooinda accommodation complex and Yellow Water wetlands is 47km down the Kakadu Hwy from the Arnhem Hwy intersection.

Thunderbolts Hideout
About 12km out on the road north to Lisbon, this is where bushranger Captain Thunderbolt holed up in hiding. On your way, check out the Tenterfield Weather Rock near the baths.

Tobwabba Art
Tobwabba Art is owned by the Worimi people of the Great Lakes region. The centre exhibits their paintings and artefacts. It is run by volunteers so the opening hours can be erratic.

Calcified Forest
From Currie, head south to the Seal Rocks Reserve (off South Rd). A 30-minute return stroll takes you to a viewing platform to survey the fossilised stumps of rainforest trees.

Burnie Inn
Located in Burnie Park, this National Trust鈥揷lassified inn was built in 1847 and later moved to the park from its original location. You can admire it from the outside only.

Broome Museum
Discover Cable Beach and Chinatowns origins through exhibits devoted to the areas pearling history and WWII bombing in this quirky museum, occupying the former Customs House.

Big Rocking Horse
Gumerachas main attraction is climbing the 18.3m-high Big Rocking Horse, which doesnt actually rock, but is unusually tasteful as far as Australias big tourist attractions go.

Alexandra Park & Zoo
Lovely sprawling park with plenty of shady trees, flower beds and swaths of green lawn for a lazy picnic, right beside the Burnett River. There鈥檚 also a small zoo for the littlies.

The lawn in front of Old Parliament House is home to the Aboriginal Tent Embassy 鈥?an important site in the struggle for equality and representation for Indigenous Australians.

Goldfields Historic Chinese Cemetery
The Goldfields Historic Chinese Cemetery is the oldest and most significant of its kind in Australia, with a prayer oven where paper money for the spirits of the dead was burnt.

Raptor Domain
Check out some KI wedge-tailed eagles, barn owls and kookaburras at a one-hour birds-of-prey display (11.30am and 2.30pm), or go scaly at a one-hour lizards and snakes show (1pm).

Katherine Public Art & Craft Galley
The low-key gallery is home to the Katherine Collection , a community-owned collection of interesting local art. There are a couple of amazing photos from the 98 flood here too.

Town Hall
There are free 20-minute tours of Hobart鈥檚 grand Town Hall . It was built in 1864 and styled based on Rome鈥檚 stunning Palazzo Farnese. Tours depart from the Macquarie St foyer.

Maryborough Heritage City Markets
Market fun made all the more entertaining by the firing (1pm) of the historic Time Cannon, a town crier and rides (adult/child $3/2) on the Mary Ann steam loco through Queens Park.

Mannum Dock Museum of River History
Features info on local Ngarrindjeri Aboriginal communities, an 1876 dry dock and the restored 1897 paddle steamer PS Marion , on which you can occasionally chug around the river.

This is probably the last thing you expect to find out here, on the edge of nowhere 鈥?and its the culmination of Englishman Adrian Bennetts lifetime obsession with the theme.

Coal Creek Village
Coal Creek Village is a re-creation of a 19th-century mining town. Its a little less polished and touristy than other similar places in Victoria, which may appeal to many.

Emma Gorge
Emma Gorge features a sublime plunge pool and waterfall, one of the prettiest in the whole Kimberley. The attached resort has an open-air bistro and expensive, stuffy cabins.

Burnie Regional Museum
This absorbing museum is a re-creation of a 1900s village streetscape 鈥?including blacksmith, wash house, stagecoach depot and bootmaker 鈥?complete with appropriate soundtrack.

Beachport Jetty
The 800m-long jetty provides excellent fishing for local pelicans and fishermen: try your luck for some whiting, school shark, squid and the easy-eating Lake George mullet.
