Yankalilla History Museum
Theres a small local history museum out the back of the Yankalilla visitor centre. Look for the radar antenna from the scuttled HMAS Hobart , now a nearby dive site offshore.

Wombeyan Caves
The convoluted but spectacular, limestone Wombeyan Caves are at the end of an unsealed mountain road 65km northwest of Mittagong. Nearby are walking trails and plenty of wildlife.

Main Beach Pavilion
The lovely Spanish Mission鈥搒tyle Main Beach Pavilion (1934) is a remnant from less hectic times. Inside are some fabulous old photos of the Gold Coast in pre-skyscraper days.

Malkumba
Prior to European settlement this area had a large Aboriginal population; relics such as middens and grinding stones can still be seen. The park has also semipermanent lakes.

Warrumbungle Observatory
A private observatory offering 90-minute night-sky viewing, run by an astronomer with the delightful name of Peter Starr. Its about 9km from town, en route to Siding Spring.

Old Wentworth Gaol
At the northwestern end of town, the Wentworth Gaol is a fascinating step back in time; it opened in 1881 and was in operation until 1927. Theres an antique store on-site.

Old Castlemaine Gaol
The last prisoners moved out of the imposing Old Castlemaine Gaol in 1990. Today you can take a guided tour of the old cells, gallows and watchtowers, and there鈥檚 a small cafe.

The Pass
For the famous breaks, walk from Main Beach past Clarks Beach to The Pass, which leads onto Wategos and Little Wategos Beaches. Dolphin sightings are common at these spots.

Established by one of Australia鈥檚 major wine industry figures, the late Len Evans, this classy winery is part of a package of sophisticated accommodation and eating options.

Ninth Island Vineyard
Even if you鈥檙e no wine buff, drop into glorious Ninth Island. The vine views are achingly beautiful, especially when the grape leaves burn with autumn hues. Super sauvignon blanc.

Diamond Tree Lookout
Nine kilometres south of Manjimup along the South Western Hwy is the Diamond Tree Lookout. Metal spikes allow you to climb this 52m karri, and theres a nature trail nearby.

All Souls & St Bartholomew Memorial Church
Built in 1893 in memory of the 134 lives that were lost when the Quetta struck an uncharted reef and sank within three minutes. Inside is memorabilia from a number of shipwrecks.
