About 30km north of Masterton, the 1000-hectare Pukaha Mt Bruce National Wildlife Centre is one of NZ's most successful wildlife and captive breeding centres. The scenic 1½-hour loop walk gives a good overview. There's also a kiwi house here and a series of aviaries for viewing other native birds. Tuatara are also on show, and the eels are fed daily at 1.30pm. Guided walks run daily and on Saturday nights – book in advance. Cafe and shop on-site.
