Known as the Edinburgh of the south, the charming city of Dunedin is a wonderful vacation spot for visitors of all interests. Known primarily for its incredible wildlife attractions, the city itself is filled with interesting activities.
For food-lovers, take a tour of the Cadbury World, the chocolate factory that produces more than 75% of New Zealand's chocolate. If you don't have too much of a sweet tooth, check out Speights Brewery, a city landmark that offers daily tours and tastings for those over 18. The city center, known as the Octagon, is bustling with shops and restaurants, and is always a lively place to visit.
For nature lovers, the Royal Albatross Centre, Dunedin Botanical Gardens, Orokunui EcoSanctuary, and Penguin Place are must-sees. Also visit the Otago Peninsula for stunning sea views, as well as the beautiful Tunnel Beach.
A trip to Dunedin would be incomplete without a visit to Baldwin Street, which holds the Guinness World Record for the steepest street in the world. If you're visiting in the summer, take part in the Baldwin Street Gutbuster, an annual festival in which participants run up and down the street.
If you're arriving into Dunedin International Airport, there are regular shuttles and buses that will take you the 30km into town. You can also take a taxi, as well as rent a car.
There are daily buses to and from Christchurch, Invercargill, Wanaka, and Queenstown, including overnight buses. While the train station is in the heart of the city, it is limited to the Gorge Railway, and thus may not be the best choice for regular transit.
Once you're in the city, the Dunedin Bus service is reliable and well-priced, and will get you around to see the city's main attractions. There is also a bus line that goes out to the peninsula, but be warned that they do not go to the tourist locations such as the Royal Albatross Centre. Most buses are handicap-friendly.
You can also rent bicycles to get around town, as the city center is fairly flat, despite the extremely steep hills. Taking a bike is great way to see the Otago Peninsula via Harington Point Road.
