Knights Point
A monument at this spectacular roadside lookout commemorates the opening of this section of coastal highway, in 1965. Its an easy pull-over off the highway, 5km south of Lake Moeraki.

Waipoua Forest Visitor Centre
Interesting exhibition on the kauri forests, guided tours ($25), flax-weaving lessons ($5) and a good cafe. You can also plant your own kauri tree – complete with GPS coordinates – for $180.

Water Tower
Built in 1889, this elegant, 43m-high, brick-clad structure resembles a lighthouse more than it does a water tower. It was built to supply the city with ready water in the event of a fire.

Settle in with a tapas platter and a glass of Man O Wars Valhalla Chardonnay at Waihekes only beachfront tasting room. If the weather is good, go for a swim in beautiful Man O War Bay.

Takiroa Māori Rock Painting Site
Hidden within the honeycomb cliffs lining the highway, this well-signposted site, 3km west of Duntroon, features centuries-old drawings of mystical creatures, animals and even a sailing ship.

Explore NZ’s art scene at this expansive and airy gallery. Only a fraction of the collection is displayed at any given time, with most of the space given over to often-edgy temporary shows.

Hop Federation
Pop in for tastings ($3) and fill a flagon to go at this teeny-weeny but terrific craft brewery 5km from Mot. Our pick of the ales is the Red IPA. (And note the cherry stall across the road.)

Ward Observatory
Astro-geeks will be delighted to know that this 24cm telescope is the largest unmodified refractor operating in NZ. Roll up at 7.30pm on Friday nights to gaze at galaxies far, far away.

St Marys
This handsome Catholic church, completed in 1928, must be admired from the outside only as the Canterbury earthquakes effected its closure. Fundraising is currently underway to strengthen it.

Presbyterian Church
This wooden church has perched on a knoll overlooking the bay since 1904. One local wagers that shipwrights had a hand in its building: some of the joints are a pleasure to behold.

Queens Park
Half-wild, half-tamed Queens Park encompasses a whopping 80 hectares of trees, plant collections, playing fields, ponds, playgrounds, farm animals, aviaries and even a Wonderland castle.

Clock Tower
This art-deco clock tower is the undisputed highlight of Gisbornes main street.

Hackfalls Arboretum
Tree-huggers will enjoy the 3000 rare plants at Hackfalls, a 3km detour from the turn-off at the Tiniroto Tavern. Explore by yourself, or book a guided tour (an extra $10 per person).

Bushmere Estate
Great chardonnay, gewürztraminer and cafe lunches at the sassy restaurant Vines (lunch mains $26 to $30), and live music on summer Sundays. Reduced winter hours; longer summer hours.

Long Beach
About 1.5km behind Russell (an easy walk or cycle) is this placid, child-friendly beach. Turn left (facing the sea) to visit Donkey Bay, a small cove that is an unofficial nudist beach.

Queens Gardens
Immerse yourself in around 125 years of botanical history in this ornamental garden, which commemorates the 50th jubilee of Queen Victorias coronation. Great for a picnic or lawny lie-down.

Punanga Manu o Te Anau
By the lake, this set of outdoor aviaries offers a chance to see native bird species difficult to spot in the wild, including the precious icon of Fiordland, the extremely rare takahe.

Hastings City Art Gallery
The citys neat little gallery presents contemporary NZ (including Māori) and international art in a bright, purpose-built space. Expect some wacky stuff (much wackier than Hastings itself…).

Mission House
Take a tour of the wooden Mission House, NZs oldest building (1822). Tours leave from the Stone Store , and include admission to The Soul Trade exhibition on the 1st floor of the store.

Sunset Point
A spectacular vantage point at any time of day, this is – as the name suggests – the primo place to watch the light fade away. Surfers, seagulls, longshore drift and fish and chips: this is New Zealand.
