Spinning north of Manawatu Gorge is Te Āpiti Wind Farm. Its on private land, but there are mesmerising views from Saddle Rd – ask the Palmerston North i-SITE for directions.

The Waterworks
The Waterworks, 5km from SH25, is a wonderfully bizarre park filled with whimsical water-powered amusements made from old kitchen knives, washing machines, bikes and toilets.

Friendly Bay Playground
Steampunk for kiddies: this unusual playground includes swings suspended from a giant penny farthing, a slippery pole accessed from an armoured elephant, and a giant hamster wheel.

Bushmans Museum
Sharing a building with the Tuatapere Hump Ridge Track Information Centre, this modest museum features rusting relics and photographic records of the areas timber-milling past.

The variety of craft beers available to taste at this wee brewery never wanes. Stop in to fill a rigger (flagon) to take away, or sup an ale with a platter or pizza (food from 3pm).

Te Aroha Museum
In the town’s ornate former thermal sanatorium (aka the ‘Treasure of Te Aroha’). Displays include quirky ceramics, old spa-water bottles, historic photos and an old printing press.

Lift Machinery Housing Lookout
High on Durie Hill atop the machinery housing for the Durie Hill Elevator , theres a lookout platform from where the city views are eye-popping. Climb the 41 spiral steps.

Picton Museum
If you dig local history – whaling, sailing and the 1964 Roller Skating Champs – this will float your boat. The photo displays are well worth a look, especially for five bucks.

Kinder House
Built of volcanic stone, this 1857 home displays the watercolours and memorabilia of the Reverend Dr John Kinder (1819–1903), headmaster of the Church of England Grammar School.

Besides a replica street-scene, vintage mechanicals, and well-presented historical displays, there’s the Wine Exhibition , for those looking to cap off their vineyard experiences.

Right next door to Stratford i-SITE , the Percy Thomson Gallery is a progressive community gallery (named after the former mayor) displaying eclectic local and touring art shows.

Cambridge Museum
In a former courthouse, the quirky Cambridge Museum has plenty of pioneer relics, a military history room and a small display on the local Te Totara Pa before it was wiped out.

Gisborne Botanic Gardens
The town gardens are sitting pretty beside the Taruheru River – a beaut spot for a picnic and a romp around the big playground . Wiggle through the NZ native Bushland Walkway .

Kawiti Glowworm Caves
South of the town Kawakawa, a signpost from SH1 points to Kawiti Glowworm Caves. Explore the insect-illuminated caverns with a 30-minute subterranean tour. Guided tours only.

A 3D Great Maze and lots of fascinating brain-bending visual illusions to keep people of all ages bemused, bothered and bewildered. It’s en route to Cromwell, 2km from town.

Sip a wide range of high-quality wines at this character-filled cellar door, with a casual on-site cafe overlooking the vines. Their flagship Home Block pinot noir is a knockout.

Harbourside spot with a wide selection of the regions vino to sample (…the pervasive sea-scent may be hard to reconcile with the chardonnay on your palate). Reduced winter hours.

Central Otagos history of gold-mining, winemaking, orcharding and sheep farming is covered in this excellent regional museum and gallery, which shares a building with the i-SITE.

Seifried
Situated at the SH60 Rabbit Island/Moturoa turn-off, Seifried is one of the region’s biggest wineries, and is home to a pleasant garden restaurant and the delicious Sweet Agnes riesling.
