Harbour
The harbour is the most colourful part of town and it’s worth exploring. There are one-man canoes, brightly painted island boats, work tugs and passenger vessels.

Japanese Peace Memorial
The Japanese Peace Memorial, the main Japanese memorial in the Pacific, is dignified and testament to the forgiveness of the local people. There’s a smashing view from here.

Paga Point
The harbour headland, Paga Point, is adjacent to Town. It’s worth walking to the top of Paga Hill for the fine views over the town, the harbour and the encircling reefs – but don’t go alone.

Provincial Government Buildings
The southern section of Nusa Parade continues past the market and further along on the left are the Provincial Government Buildings, built on the site of Baron Boluminskis residence.

Smoked Bodies
The best place to view a smoked body is at Watama, a village within an easy walk of Menyamya. Ask at the Menyamya provincial authority, which will contact the relevant village elders.

Buyeti display site
The beautiful Goldies bird of paradise is endemic to the island and can be seen at the Buyeti display site, a three-hour walk from Sibanai, but youll need a guide to show you where its located.

Arawa
About 10km south of Morgan Junction, youll reach Arawa and Kieta, which are virtually contiguous. Both were severely damaged during the conflict in the 1990s. Whole neighbourhoods have been abandoned.

Megaliths
Megaliths made of a coral composite have linked the Trobriands to possible early Polynesian migrations. You can see them, but not without a guide - speak with Bweka Village Resort or Butia Lodge.

Sewa Bay
One of the most accessible and picturesque bays in the region is Sewa Bay a 45-minute boat ride from East Cape. During WWII the Allies based warships here among seven tiny islands in the harbour.

Paradise Beach
There are several palm-fringed beaches around the island but the pick of the bunch is Paradise Beach, a hot half-day walk to the islands far tip. Arrange for a local guide or charter a dinghy.

Salemben
Salemben is a small village about a three-hour drive from Madang inland over rough roads from Malolo. At 900m above sea level, the area is home to many birds of paradise and a nice guesthouse.

East New Britain Historical & Cultural Centre
The rewarding East New Britain Historical & Cultural Centre has a fine collection of historical objects, photographs and many WWII relics. A cassowary and a pair of blue-eyed cockatoos reside in the yard.

Bolubolu
Bolubolu is the main settlement, about 10km south of Vivigani. In the centre of the island there is a large stone, covered in mysterious black-and-white paintings, which is said to have power over the yam crops.

Raun Raun Theatre
The theatre is a superb building, which blends traditional materials and modern architecture. It’s located on parkland about 500m due north of the post office. Performances are irregular, but you might get lucky.

Lorengau
The provincial capital, Lorengau, is the only town, which is stretched along Seeadler Harbour. This very casual place livens up on weekends when baptism of fire sermons are preached to an enthusiastic crowd.

Gembogl
Niglguma and Gembogl, both traditional high-altitude villages, are worth visiting - you can walk to Gembogl from Kegsugl in a couple of hours and, on the way, you pass through half-a-dozen villages, including Niglguma.

The black-sand beaches along the coast are indicative of volcanic activity on Karkar and Manam Islands. Theres good swimming, but watch the currents. The 1996 film production of Robinson Crusoe was filmed around here.
