This cemetery is arguably BA’s number-one attraction, and a must on every tourist’s list. You can wander for hours in this amazing city of the dead, where countless ‘streets’ are lined with impressive statues and marble mausoleums. Peek into the crypts and check out the dusty coffins and try to decipher the history of its inhabitants. Past presidents, military heroes, influential politicians and the just plain rich and famous have made it past the gates here.
Free tours are offered in English at 11am Tuesday and Thursday and in Spanish at 11am and 3pm from Tuesday to Friday (weather permitting). For a great map and information, order Robert Wright’s PDF guide (www.recoletacemetery.com); touts also sell maps at the entrance.
Entry to the cemetery was free at the time of research, but an AR$100 entry fee is likely to be implemented early 2016.
