This remote national park can only be accessed by road through Bolivia. Lipeo, a hamlet at the northwest corner of the park, has a ranger station and campsite but no other services, though locals offer accommodation in their homes. There are various trails to tackle on foot or horseback. Los Toldos, 26km short of Lipeo, has accommodations, eateries and shops. Speak to rangers or the parks office in Salta before coming. If you read Spanish, www.barituparquenacional.blogspot.com is a good resource.
Hire-car companies won't let you take a vehicle into Bolivia, so a mixture of buses and hitchhiking is likely your only option. From RN34, 90km beyond Calilegua, head for Orán then Aguas Blancas. Crossing into Bolivia, hug the north bank of Río Bermejo, heading westward 113km, before crossing back into Argentina at La Mamora. A further 17km gets you to Los Toldos, and another 26km brings you to Lipeo. June to October is the best time to visit, as summer rains can render the road impassable.
