Ciudad Perdida & Cañón Arco Iris
In another part of the park, accessed from the road 14km before reaching the main park entrance, these impressive formations are accessed via guided 4WD tours, which wait to fill (AR$250 to AR$300; three to four hours).

Bodega Nanni
The half-hourly tour and tastings of four young wines are short and bright here at this small, central winery with a lovely grass patio. Wines are organic, uncomplicated and drinkable. Theres a good on-site restaurant.

Basílica de Santísimo Sacramento
In the shadow of the Kavanagh building is this French-style church built by the Anchorena family in 1916. Inside, check out the original tiled floor, stained-glass windows, stone columns and wedding-cake-like altar.

Puerto Madero
East of the city center is BA’s newest barrio, Puerto Madero. This renovated docklands area is lined with pleasant pedestrian walkways, expensive lofts, trendy restaurants and bars and some of the city’s priciest hotels.

Iglesia de la Merced
Built at the turn of the 20th century, this neo-Gothic church is a La Rioja landmark and houses the mausoleum of General Ocampo, a local boy who became an important military commander in the struggle for independence.

Palacio Haedo
On an odd triangular block at the corner of Florida and Santa Fe, the neo-Gothic Palacio Haedo was the mansion of the Haedo family at the turn of the 19th century; it now houses the country’s national park service.

Bodegas Chandon
The modern Bodegas Chandon is popular with tour groups and known for its sparkling wines (champagne). Tours are available in Spanish and English. Take bus 380 (AR$4.50, one hour) from platform 53 in Mendoza’s bus terminal.

Carinae
Carinae is the furthest south you really want to go on a wine tour from Mendoza – it’s a small, French-owned winery producing a lovely rosé and some good reds. Tour fees are deducted from any wine purchases you make.

Observatorio Punta Flecha
Run by Fundación Patagonia Natural, this whale-watching observatory sits 17km north of Puerto Madryn on Playa el Doradillo. Offers tourist information and opens at high tide, when theres more whales and visitors to the beach.

Complejo Ecológico Municipal
At the junction of RN16 and RN95, 4km east of downtown, the town’s spacious zoo and botanical garden emphasizes birds and mammals found in the Chaco region, alongside a few lions, tigers, bears and a bafflingly large chicken pen.

Teatro Juan de Vera
A striking Belle Époque building; ask at the ticket office if you can have a peek inside to see the beautiful treble-galleried theater and its painted ceiling. The cupola retracts when management fancies a starlit performance.

Museo Municipal Carmen Funes
The sheer size of the Argentinosaurus huinculensis is difficult to fathom, which is why stopping to gawk at the replica skeleton of the homegrown dinosaur at Plaza Huincul’s Museo Municipal Carmen Funes is a humbling lesson in size.

Templo Parroquial Nuestra Señora del Carmen
Salesians built the Templo Parroquial Nuestra Señora del Carmen in 1883. Its image of the Virgin, dating from 1780, is southern Argentinas oldest, and two of the original seven Brazilian flags captured in 1827 are on the altar.

Archivo Museo Histórico Municipal Roberto T Barili
In the Villa Emilio Mitre (1930), a former summer residence of the Argentine oligarchy, this museum houses a superb collection of late-19th-century photographs, along with other exhibits recalling Mar del Plata’s colorful past.

Museo Jesuítico Nacional de Jesús María
The Unesco-listed Museo Jesuítico Nacional de Jesús María has good archaeological pieces from indigenous groups throughout Argentina, informative maps of the missionary trajectory and well-restored (though dubiously authentic) rooms.

Museo Antropológico
The Museo Antropológico offers humble homage to indigenous cultures and history. Ask the tourist office for access. Nearby is the 300m Túnel del Ferrocarril , a brick tunnel through which the first trains to Dolavon passed in 1914.

Museo Provincial Padre Jesús Molina
Satiate your appetite for dinosaur dioramas and modern art at this museum offering exhibits on anthropology, paleontology, geology and fine arts. The Tehuelche ethnology exhibit includes fascinating photographs and local history.

Museo Histórico Nacional del Virrey Liniers
Beside the Iglesia Parroquial Nuestra Señora de la Merced is the Museo Histórico Nacional del Virrey Liniers, named after former resident Virrey Liniers, one of the last officials to occupy the post of Viceroy of the River Plate.

Parque Los Menhires
At Parque Los Menhires, at the southern end of La Angostura reservoir, stand more than 80 indigenous granite monuments collected from nearby archaeological sites. Some say they resemble the standing stones of the Scottish Hebrides.

Museo Judío de Entre Ríos
Three rooms detailing the arrival and struggles of the Jewish gauchos, their way of life and the Holocaust seen through the eyes of those who experienced it. Also temporary exhibitions. One block west and 2½ south of the plaza.
