Museo José Antonio Terry is largely devoted to the work of a porteño (resident of Buenos Aires) painter whose themes were largely rural and indigenous; his oils depict weavers, market scenes and portraits.

Museo Folclórico Manuel Belgrano
Occupying a colonial house, this pleasant museum features a good collection of traditional gaucho gear, indigenous musical instruments (check out the armadillo charangos ) and weavings, as well as some pottery.

Francois Lurton
An ultramodern facility run by two French brothers from a famous winemaking family, producing one of the best Mendoza torrontés on the market. Excellent tours with impressive tasting areas and barrel room.

Museo del Fin del Mundo
Built in 1903, this former bank contains exhibits on Fuegian natural history, stuffed bird life, life of natives and early penal colonies, and replicas of moderate interest. Guided visits are at 11am and 3:30pm.

Museo Regional Patagónico
Decaying natural-history specimens overshadow some small yet entertaining archaeological and historical items, including well-crafted pottery, spear points and materials on early South African Boer immigrants.

Laguna Oca
Six kilometers south of town, Laguna Oca is a wetland area that has a popular beach, with food kiosks and canoe hire; once you wander away from the weekend crowds, theres a great deal of birdlife to be spotted.

Historia y Sabores
Seven families run this little chocolate- and liqueur-making operation. Tours are brief, but the lovely rustic surrounds and comfy bar (where you’re invited to a free shot of liqueur) make it a worthwhile stop.

Aerosilla
1260m Cerro Pan de Azúcar offers good views of the sierras and, on a clear day, the city of Córdoba. An aerosilla runs to the summit regularly in summer – check with the tourist office in the off season.

Bodega El Cese
This picturesque boutique winery sits in a lovely setting 7km north of the turnoff to Angastaco. Wines are uncomplicated but tasty, and free tastings are given. Best to phone ahead, as its not always attended.

Basílica Nuestra Señora de la Merced
The tiled domes of this modest church are one of the defining features of the Córdoba skyline. Check out the baroque pulpit dating from 1776 and the ornately carved main doors, fashioned from Paraguayan cedar.

Museo Regional Desiderio Torres
Housed in the atmospheric old train station, the Museo Regional Desiderio Torres offers interesting archaeological and paleontological displays, as well as indigenous artifacts with an emphasis on weaving.

Museo Popular Callejero
An innovative sidewalk museum. It consists of a series of encased streetside dioramas with odd clay sculptures depicting changes in one of Mendoza’s major avenues since its 1830 creation in a dry watercourse.

Museo Pampeano
The excellent Museo Pampeano is filled with artifacts from the area’s various former inhabitants – indigenous people, the gauchos and the wealthy landowners. Note the interesting chair made from animal bones.

Centro Cultural de la Cooperación
A modern cultural center offering theatre, cinema, music, dance, expositions and workshops. On weekends it sometimes has children’s puppet shows or other kids’ events. Also on the premises is a slick café.

Museo Municipal de Arte Juan Carlos Castagnino
Built in 1909 as the summer residence of a prominent Argentine family, the turreted Villa Ortiz Basualdo now houses this fine arts museum; its interior exhibits paintings, photographs and sculptures by Argentine artists.

Parque Nacional Río Pilcomayo
For good birdwatching, this park, 126km northwest of Formosa and 55km west of Clorinda, is close to the Paraguay border. The main feature is called Laguna Blanca, where rangers can take you out in boats to spot caiman.

Museo del Tren
Just outside town, this train museum is in the Roca train station where La Trochita, Argentina’s famous narrow-gauge steam train, stops. In summer several tour agencies sell tickets for roundtrip rides on the antique train.

Reserva Los Huemules
This private 56-sq-km reserve has 25km of marked trails, and offers a quiet alternative adjacent to Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. Stop by the visitor center first. It’s 17km beyond El Chaltén, just after Río Eléctrico.

Museo de Ciencias Naturales
The most interesting specimen at the Museo de Ciencias Naturales is the skeleton of the dinosaur Herrerasaurus from Ischigualasto, though there are plenty of provincial minerals, fossils and other exhibits to mull over.
