Fundación Patagonia Natural
A well-run nongovernmental organization, Fundación Patagonia Natural promotes conservation and monitors environmental issues. Volunteers here diligently nurse injured birds and marine mammals to health.

The museum is filled with archaeological and ethnographic materials, life-like stuffed animals and enlightening historical evaluations on such topics as Mapuche resistance to the Conquest of the Desert.

Museo Nao Victoria
Relive Magellan’s landing at this museum and theme park with life-sized figures cloaked in armor and shown celebrating Mass and battling mutiny, at the port on a reproduction of the original ship.

Monumento a Los Españoles
This magnificent white monument on broad Av del Libertador was built in 1927. The massive figures at its base represent four regions of Argentina: the Pampas, the Andes, the Chaco and Río de La Plata.

Centro de Interpretacíon Historico
Small but informative, with a skeleton mold of Austroraptor Cabazai (found nearby) and Patagonian history displays. The friendly host invites museum-goers for a post-tour mate (a bitter ritual tea).

Andresito statue
Pride of place on the Posadas costanera goes to this huge stainless-steel sculpture of Guaraní provincial strongman Andrés Guacarurí (Guazurary), looking like the Tin Man in search of a heart.

Iglesia de la Compañía
On the east side of the colonial square, the exterior simplicity of the Jesuit Iglesia de la Compañía masks an ornate interior. Dating from 1696, its the provinces best-preserved colonial church.

Museo de Artes Visuales
Adjoined to the tourist office, this small visual-arts museum features works on loan from the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes in Buenos Aires, as well as polished relics from Welsh colonization.

Iglesia San Pedro Nolasco
The town’s lovely church in the Cuzco style dates from the 17th- and 18th-centuries, and features twin bell towers and a cactus-wood ceiling. The Stations of the Cross are tapestries by local artisans.

Laguna Nimez
Alongside the lakeshore, north of town, Laguna Nimez is prime avian habitat – and a great place to spot flamingos – but watching birds from El Calafate’s shoreline on Lago Argentino can be just as good.
