Rio's oldest favela (slum, informal community) lies just north of Estação Dom Pedro II, the central train station. A free teleférico (aerial tram) connects the train station with the favela, and continues to a station on the north side (close to Gamboa). The views are excellent, and it's worth stopping at the top, but it's not advisable to wander around the favela on your own. If you plan to explore, go with a local who knows the area.
