Enjoy great views of Petrópolis and the surrounding hills from this 3.5m Italian sculpture of the NS de Fátima Madonna. To reach it, turn right as you leave the Casa de Santos Dumont and continue walking uphill, always taking the right fork.

Matriz NS dos Remédios
Built in 1787 on the site of two 17th-century churches, this church holds art from past and contemporary local artists. According to legend, the construction of the church was financed by pirate treasure found hidden on Praia da Trindade.

Museu Histórico Sergipe
The Museu Histórico Sergipe is housed in the former Palácio do Governo. It has paintings from Carybé and other Northeastern artists, a room for aficionados of the outlaw Lampião and antique furniture and other relics recalling bygone days.

Parque Estadual da Guarita
The gardens of Parque Guarita, 2km south of Av Beira Mar, make for a gorgeous natural setting, while the nearby beach of the same name is considered the most beautiful in Torres, a true stunner reminiscent of rocky British Isle beaches.

Fazenda Cachoeira do Mato Dentro
Prime attractions at this historic working coffee fazenda 20km northeast of Vassouras are the neoclassical mansion with its 19th-century furnishings and the jams and sweets produced onsite. Arrange visits in advance with the fazenda .

Igreja de NS do Ó
A riot of gold, red and blue, the diminutive Igreja de NS do Ó is one of Minas’s little gems. Dedicated to the Virgin Mary in her role as protector of pregnant women and those praying for fertility, it also features many Eastern details.

Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco
The most important building to visit in the city center is the Igreja da Ordem Terceira de São Francisco, a church dating from 1697 with a Capela Dourada (Golden Chapel) that is one of the finest examples of Brazilian baroque architecture.

Igreja Matriz NS do Rosário
The church dates to between 1693 and 1754. It has beautiful azulejos and a ceiling painted by Teófilo de Jesus. On the 2nd floor, the Museu das Alfaias contains remnants from the abandoned 17th-century Convento de São Francisco do Paraguaçu.

Museu da Boa Morte
The exclusively female Boa Morte (Good Death) religious society began as a sisterhood of slaves that assured dead slaves a proper burial and bought old slaves their freedom. This small museum was closed for renovations at the time of writing.

Museu Casa de Rui Barbosa
The former mansion of famous Brazilian journalist and diplomat Rui Barbosa is now a museum housing his library and personal belongings. Barbosa played a pivotal role in shaping the country’s socioeconomic development in the early 20th century.

Museu do Negro
In this building that once housed a slave market (notice the absence of windows), the Museu do Negro exhibits relics of slavery including a replica whipping-post, and a striking collection of wood carvings and statuettes from West Africa.

Gruta da Lapinha
The highlight here is the Véu de Noiva, a crystal formation in the shape of a bride’s veil. Atual runs frequent buses to Lagoa Santa (R$6, 70 minutes); from there, bus 306 continues to the cave (R$3.50, 35 minutes, every 40 minutes from 7am).

Parque Municipal
One of Beagás most appealing spots, this enormous sea of tropical greenery with artificial lakes and winding pathways is just 10 minutes southeast of the bus station. Its especially fun on Sunday, when everyones out strolling and socializing.

Cachoeira has maintained a tradition of wood carving with a heavy African flavor. Stop in on the atelier (studios) of one of the best sculptors in town, Louco , to get a sense of the local style; it operates roughly from 10am to 4pm Monday to Friday.

Serpentario Nacional Amero
Some 11km from downtown, you’ll find the Serpentario Nacional Amero where you can get up close and personal with boas, anacondas and other slithery creatures on show at this snake sanctuary. Take a taxi or the bus (COP$2500) from Parque Orellana.

Palácio de Cristal
An eye-catching sight in Petrópolis is the Palácio de Cristal , which was built for Princesa Isabel in France and brought to the country in 1884. It houses a greenhouse, just as it did back then, and features fountains and lush greenery in front.

Parque do Catete
The small landscaped park on the grounds of the Palácio do Catete provides a quiet refuge from the city. Its pond and shade-covered walks are popular with neighborhood strollers and children. Special performances in the park include concerts and plays.

Don Giovanni
Both a winery and a homey pousada , Don Giovanni is a one-stop shop in Pinto Bandeira. The eight rooms here are large and feed off a rustic upscale aesthetic, with expansive views of 50 hectares of vineyards. Its most famous for sparkling wines.

Casa da Chica da Silva
This fine colonial mansion was the home of diamond contractor João Fernandes de Oliveira and his longtime partner, the former slave Chica da Silva. Upstairs, paintings and poems (in Portuguese only) evoke the lifestyle of the extravagant mulatto.
