Palácio dos Leões
The Palácio dos Leões is the state governor’s palace, built in the 18th century on the site of the original French fort. It contains a wealth of valuable antique furnishings and art, mostly French from the 18th and 19th centuries.

Museu do Paço Imperial
Occupying the top floor of the house Dom Pedro II once slept in, the Museu do Paço Imperial displays lamps, portraits, furniture and elegant finery from the imperial period (17th and 18th centuries); it’s tiny but nicely presented.

Galeria do Largo
Right on Praça São Sebastião, Galeria do Largo has a modern-minded rotation of art exhibits, from contemporary paintings to innovative sculpture. The attached cafe serves unique snacks and drinks at tables set up on the plaza.

Museu do Homem Americano
The modernized Museu do Homem Americano is on the outskirts of São Raimundo, with excellent English info on what you will see in the park. It also exhibits the oldest human skull found in the Americas, nearly 10,000 years old.

Espaço Cultural de Goiandeira do Courto
The Espaço Cultural de Goiandeira do Courto is well worth a visit. The art created here uses 551 varieties of sparkling colored sands found in the Serra Dourada, predating pixilation by decades (and done by hand, it should be noted).

Instituto Kat Schürmann
The Schürmann family are local celebrities, known for their worldwide travels and their research on marine biology. The visitors center in Bombinhas has a 400m ecological trail, exhibits and films about the family’s expeditions.

Parque Nacional do Iguaçu
You can’t miss the shiny entrance to the Parque Nacional do Iguaçu , which houses bathrooms, ATMs, lockers, souvenir shops and vast parking facilities. Once you buy your ticket, you will be directed to board a free double-decker bus.

Igreja São Batista
While the bulk of the old town was built in the 19th century, there are a few buildings that date to the 16th century, such as the Igreja São Batista . Unfortunately, many buildings in the town are in varying states of disrepair.

Fazenda Santa Eufrásia
Dating to 1830 and enshrined as a national historic monument, this restored coffee fazenda 13km west of Vassouras displays a lovely collection of 19th-century furniture. Visits can be arranged in advance directly with the fazenda .

Praia Vermelha
Beneath Morro da Urca, narrow Praia Vermelha has superb views of the rocky coastline from the shore. Its coarse sand gives the beach the name vermelha (red). Because the beach is protected by the headland, the water is usually calm.

Igreja de São Pedro Gonçalves
Down in whats called the Cidade Baixa, the adjacent squares Praça Anthenor Navarro and Largo de São Pedro Gonçalves are both lined with pastel-colored buildings and dominated by the large 19th-century Igreja de São Pedro Gonçalves.

Centro de Interpretación Natütama
The Centro de Interpretación Natütama has a fascinating museum with nearly 100 life-sized wood carvings of Amazonian flora and fauna. There’s also a small turtle hatchery outside. Located on the riverfront just east of the docks.

Catedral Basílica da Sé
The star attraction at Marianas cathedral is its fantastic German organ dating from 1701, painted with designs from the then-Portuguese colony of Macau and adorned with carved wooden angels. Organ concerts are held twice weekly.

Eco
The Eco-Parque Peixe-Boi exists to study and rehabilitate the endangered West Indian manatee. You can watch up to 10 manatees, some rescued from injury or captivity, in a series of tanks, and see displays and films about them.

Museo Uirapuru
Museo Uirapuru is in the rear section of Leticia’s largest craft shop. Less a museum than the personal collection of the shop owner; displays include indigenous artifacts, dried plants and woods, and preserved reptiles and animals.

Marco Zero
The Marco Zero, a small Km 0 marker in the middle of the broad waterside Praça Rio Branco, marks the place where the Portuguese founded Recife in 1537. It has given its name, unofficially, to the square and its immediate surrounds.

Maria Izabel
This acclaimed cachaça distillery, 10km north of Paraty, often places within the top 10 or 20 in nationwide competitions. Call at least 24 hours in advance to arrange a visit or sign up for a tour through a Paraty travel agency.

Feira Central
A great market worth a stroll, this massive open-air food and shopping court is lined with Japanese soba-noodle joints and other eateries, as well as some indigenous crafts and leatherwork. It’s packed with revelers on weekends.

Real Gabinete Português de Leitura
Built in the Portuguese Manueline style in 1837, the gorgeous Portuguese Reading Room houses more than 350,000 works, many dating from the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries. It also has a small collection of paintings, sculptures and ancient coins.

Mercado do Porto
Close to the municipal aquarium, the Mercado do Porto houses the fish market, with a variety of species, as well as a vegetable and spice market. It’s a good place to check out what the region’s fish look like before they arrive at your table.
