Museu Amsterdam Sauer
On the most upscale street in Ipanema, the Amsterdam Sauer Museum houses an impressive collection of precious stones: more than 3000 items in all. Visitors can also take a peek at the two replicas of mines.

Museu Amazônico
Housed in a converted mansion, the Museu Amazônico has a small but excellent collection of indigenous items and artifacts from around the Amazon, many from ongoing archaeological studies in Amazonas state.

São João Batista
Midway between Santo Ângelo and São Miguel, little remains from the mission at São João Batista. With a little imagination, it is possible to make out the structures of the church, the cemetery and the school.

Praia da Costa
This Vila Velha beach is the city’s nicest. It has fewer hotels and restaurants than Camburí, but you can swim and bodysurf. Keep a close eye on the horizon – huge supertankers often pop up with surprising speed!

Praia Itaúna
About 3km east of town is Praia Itaúna, Saquaremas most beautiful beach and one of the best surf spots in Brazil. National and international surfing competitions are held here each year, generally between May and October.

Centro de Turismo
The Centro de Turismo, a converted 19th-century jail, houses a lot of craft stalls and, upstairs from the tourist information office, the Museu de Arte e Cultura Popular, which has an impressive collection of Ceará crafts.

Museu do Diamante
Between Praça JK and the cathedral is the house of Padre Rolim, one of the Inconfidentes. It’s now the Museu do Diamante, exhibiting religious art, old photos, furniture, weapons, and other relics of the diamond days.

Museu de Artes e Ofícios
Housed in Belo’s historic train station, this museum displays a wide-ranging collection of objects used in the daily lives of mineiros past and present. There are interpretive cards in English adjacent to each exhibit.

Parque Garota de Ipanema
This small park next to Ponto do Arpoador features a tiny playground, a concrete area popular with skaters, and a lookout with a view of Ipanema Beach. On weekends in summer there are occasional concerts held here.

Federal University of Paraná
The neoclassical headquarters of the Federal University of Paraná is home to MusA-UFPR , the universitys museum, which features rotating exhibitions, along with a small permanent collection of Tupi-Guarani artifacts.

Avenida Beira Mar Norte
North of the center, Av Beira Mar Norte runs along the coast of the Baía Norte. The waterfront promenade attracts runners, bikers and walkers, enjoying the breeze off the bay and a sweeping view across to the mainland.

Centro de Pesquisa de História Natural e Arqueologia do Maranhão
Contains interesting exhibits of artifacts from Maranhãos indigenous cultures past and present, from contemporary feather adornments to ancient ax heads, plus models of megafauna that roamed Maranhão 95 million years ago.

Praia do Meireles
This beach has an attractive waterfront promenade with homey beer barracas on the sand side and smart air-con restaurants alternating with hotels across the street. The fish market and evening craft fair are other draws.

Casa da Câmara e Cadeia
At the Casa da Câmara e Cadeia, organized criminals ran the show upstairs and disorganized criminals were kept behind bars downstairs. The building dates to 1698 and served as the seat of the Bahian government in 1822.

Mirante do Leblon
A few fishers casting out to sea mingle with couples admiring the view at this overlook uphill from the western end of Leblon Beach. The luxury Sheraton Hotel looms to the west, with the photogenic favela of Vidigal nearby.

Casa da Ipiranga
One of Petrópolis’ finest mansions, the Casa da Ipiranga is open to visitors by guided tour. Other historical buildings can be viewed from the outside only, including the Palácio da Princesa Isabel and the Casa do Barão de Mauá .

Bonde Station
From this station you can take the yellow Bonde up to Santa Teresa. Its a marvelous ride on a quaint yellow streetcar over the Lapa Arches to the hilltop neighborhood. However, the lines are long, so allow yourself plenty of time.

Ponte Rio
The Ponte Rio-Niterói (Ponte Pres Costa E Silva) offers spectacular views of Baía de Guanabara. The bridge is 15.5km long, 60m high and 26.6m wide, with two three-lane roads. Theres a tollbooth 3km from the Niterói city center.

Museu de Arte Contemporânea de Mato Grosso do Sul (MARCO)
Just outside the northern gate of Parque das Nações Indígenas, this compact but well-presented modern art museum showcases a permanent collection of works both by local talent and temporary exhibits by other Brazilian artists.

Museu da Cidade do Recife
Recifes City Museum is housed in the Forte das Cinco Pontas (Five-Pointed Fort), built by the Dutch in 1630. It exhibits old maps and historic photos, but could be so much more interesting given Recife’s fascinating history.
