Built in 1722, this was the church for freed mulattoes (persons of mixed black and white ancestry). It houses a tiny museum of sacred art and has some fine woodwork on the doorways and altars.

Grutas das Encantadas

Largo do Pelourinho
The steep Largo do Pelourinho is a wide square that was once the site of the pelourinho (whipping post), where slaves were auctioned (historians disagree about whether slaves were publicly tortured here).

Museu Municipal
Museu Municipal occupies an old prison, evident by the thick walls and heavy doors. Simple exhibits tell the story of Natividade; among the artifacts is a tree trunk to which slaves were tied for whipping.

Praia da Urca
This tiny beach is popular with neighborhood kids who gather here for pick-up football games when school is not in session (and sometimes when it is). A small restaurant, Garota da Urca , lies near the beach.

Forte Orange
Head to the south-east tip of Ilha de Itamaracá where Forte Orange was built by the Dutch in 1631 and reconstructed by the Portuguese in 1654. It’s an impressive citadel, with a nice view, right on the water.

Fortaleza de NS dos Prazeres
This picturesque fort, which dates to the 1760s, is a 3km hike from Nova Brasília via Praia da Fortaleza. Inspect the deserted fortress before climbing up to the lookout for an incredible vista of the bay.
