Parque da Ferradura
A 6km hike from Caracol brings you to Parque da Ferradura , named for the 420m horseshoe-shaped canyon formed by the Rio Santa Cruz. Well-marked trails take you to three lookouts.

Convento de São Francisco
This is a large structure containing the 16th-century Igreja NS das Neves and two later chapels, with rich baroque detailing and lovely azulejos (Portuguese ceramic tiles).

Museu do Carnaval
The small Museu do Carnaval has information on the history of Rio’s samba schools, and you can try on costumes, but aside from that, there isn’t much to see when the Rio’s Carnaval isn’t happening.

The triple-naved Matriz de NS de Conceição, finished in 1720, is a fascinating blend of Asian arts and Portuguese baroque, with gold leaf, red Chinese scrolls and pagodas on the sanctuary door panels.

Igreja de São Gonçalo Garcia
The Igreja de São Gonçalo Garcia was built at the end of the 18th century. The small oratório (Praça Barão de Penedo) is where the condemned spent their last night praying before being hanged.
