Club de Yates Micalvi
A grounded German cargo boat, the Micalvi was declared a regional naval museum in 1976 but found infinitely better use as a floating bar, frequented by navy men and yachties. Unfortunately, the bar isnt open to the general public.

Iglesia Santo Domingo
The dainty-looking bell tower of Iglesia Santo Domingo looks as though it should have a twirling ballerina inside. The tower is a later addition, only a century old, though the attractive limestone church dates back to 1755.

Your first encounter with the moai will probably take place at Ahu Tautira , which overlooks Caleta Hanga Roa, the fishing port in Hanga Roa at the foot of Av Te Pito o Te Henua. Here youll find a platform with two superb moai .

Museo Histórico Municipal
Osorno’s well-arranged Museo Histórico Municipal includes exhibits on Mapuche culture, the city’s shaky colonial origins, German colonization and 19th-century development, all in an impressive neocolonial building dating from 1929.

Museo Regional de la Patagonia
In town, Museo Regional de la Patagonia catalogues pioneer artifacts and Jesuit regalia. It also houses a fine collection of labeled photographs on regional history, including the construction of part of the Carretera Austral.

Cahuil
This little village has good ocean views and a few restaurants and cabins. Head to the bridge for a half-hour boat tour of the Laguna de Cahuil (CH$5000 per boat up to five people), and to purchase locally crafted ceramics.

Museo Antropológico Sebastián Englert
This well-organized museum makes a perfect introduction to the islands history and culture. It displays basalt fishhooks, obsidian spearheads and other weapons, and a moai head with reconstructed fragments of its eyes, among others.

Puna Pau
The volcanic Puna Pau quarry was used to make the reddish, cylindrical pukao (topknots) that were placed on many moai . Some 60 of these were transported to sites around the island, and another 25 remain in or near the quarry.

Palacio Astoreca
South of the plaza, Av Baquedano is lined with Georgian-style balustraded buildings dating from 1880 to 1930. Among them is the cream-and-lime painted Palacio Astoreca , a nitrate baron’s mansion that now also functions as a museum.

Museo Regional de Atacama
Built in the 1840s by industrial moguls and radical politicians, the Matta family, this national monument is worth a snoop for the architecture and the piecemeal museum with indigenous artifacts and a mock mine made of fiberglass.

Cueva de los Pincheira
On your way to the resort, stop at this roadside attraction, where you can visit a shallow cave and waterfall and learn about the escapades of the Outlaw Pincheira Brothers that hid out here. In high season, theres reenactments.

Casa Solar de los Madariaga
Dating from 1875, and looking good for it, the adobe mansion with a few leafy patios contains furnishings and artifacts from an influential family who made its money exporting chinchilla. Two of the rooms are available for rent.

Museo de Tierra del Fuego
On the Plaza de Armas, the intriguing Museo de Tierra del Fuego has some unexpected materials, including Selk’nam skulls and mummies, musical instruments used by the mission Indians on Isla Dawson and an exhibit on early Chilean cinematography.

Grupo Artesanal Llingua
The Grupo Artesanal Llingua, artisans from the nearby Isla Llingua, have a well-stocked market of their crafts including woven coffee cups, handbags and breadbaskets. Its only open on days when the ferry comes over from Isla Llingua.

Local cartoonist Lukas had a sharp eye for the idiosyncrasies of Valparaíso. You need to speak Spanish to understand his sardonic political strips in the Museo Lukas, but the ink drawings of iconic Valpo buildings speak for themselves.

Parque Ecuador
Parque Ecuador is a narrow stretch of well-maintained urban parkland that runs along the foot of Cerro Caracol – walk up one of the two access roads (continuations of Caupolicán and Tucapel) to a viewpoint with great views of Concepción.

Casa Museo Eduardo Frei Montalva
This historic former home of Chilean president Eduardo Frei Montalva (elected in 1964) holds a collection of his original furniture, textiles, paintings, glassware and cutlery alongside family photographs and mementos from his official travels.

Inti Runa
The German owner of this sun observatory claims he has two of the worlds biggest solar telescopes. He keeps them in his lovely casona, and offers one-hour tours. Basically, he talks while you look at the sun through the telescope.

Museo de Achao
Museo de Achao highlights aspects of the Chono people of Achao and other indigenous groups in Chiloé. Wood products, weavings, stones and plants used for tinting materials are all elegantly presented with informative material (in Spanish).
