Close by is the Convento de San Pedro Claver, built by the Jesuits, originally under the name of San Ignacio de Loyola. The name was changed in honor of the Spanish-born monk Pedro Claver, who lived and died in the convent. He spent his life ministering to the slaves brought from Africa. The convent is a monumental three-story building surrounding a tree-filled courtyard and part of it, including Claver's cell, is open to visitors as a museum .
