In the mountains about 500m southwest of Zapaquirá, two underground cathedrals have been carved out of salt. The first opened in 1954, then was closed in 1992 for safety reasons. You can visit its stunning replacement. It was built between 1991 and 1995, and a total of 250,000 tons of salt were removed).
