Walter Roth Museum of Anthropology
A small museum in a breezy old building with lots of Amerindian items from Guyanas nine tribes.
National Library
Andrew Carnegie built the National Library in 1909. Go inside to find a collection of old books.
Roman Catholic Cathedral
Built in the 1920s in a Romanesque architectural style, this is the premier Catholic church in Guyana.
Parliament Building
At the south end of Ave of the Republic is the well-kept Dutch period Parliament Building, built in 1834.
Castellani House
This gorgeous wooden building erected in 1877 is home to the National Art Gallery and rotating art exhibits, many by local artists.
National Museum
An old-fashioned institution documenting the nations cultural, social and political history via some odd artifacts and very old stuffed critters.
Demerara Distillers
One-hour tours take you through the distillery – where youll see the last operating wooden coffey still in the world – warehouse, heritage center and gift shop.
State House
Built in 1825, the State House is the presidents official residence. The buildings design features the Demerara shutters that are typical of Georgetowns colonial architecture.
City Hall
The distinctive neo-Gothic City Hall (1868) has a 75ft tower where colonial-period wives apparently watched for their husbands ships to come into port. Its one of Georgetowns more striking buildings.
Promenade Garden
During daylight hours, the Promenade Garden in Cummingsburg is a quiet place to relax, read and enjoy the flowers. Its peaceful now but was used in the 19th century slave uprising as a public execution area.
Botanical Gardens
Many bird-watching groups visit Georgetowns botanical gardens as an introduction to Guyanas birdlife. The gardens zoo has a diminishing collection of creatures kept in troublingly small and neglected cages.
St Georges Cathedral
The most impressive building in town is the Anglican, Gothic-style St Georges Cathedral, said to be the worlds tallest wooden building. It was completed in 1892 and was built with a native hardwood called greenheart.
