Palacio López
The grand Palacio López is the seat of government. During the early years of independence you could be shot for merely looking at the exterior!
Casa de la Independencia
The Casa de la Independencia dates from 1772 and is where Paraguay became the first country on the continent to declare its independence in 1811.
Maria Auxiliadora
The citys most eye-catching monument is the enormous statue of Maria Auxiliadora (Virgin Mary), which towers over the northern end of the main avenue.
Conmebol
The headquarters of Conmebol, the South American football confederation, is in Luque, on the road to the airport. It houses an impressive museum depicting the history of the sport on the continent.
Museo Etnográfico Andrés Barbero
The free anthropological and archaeological Museo Etnográfico Andrés Barbero displays indigenous tools, ceramics and weavings, plus superb photographs and maps showing where each item comes from.
Museum of Mennonite History
An excellent little museum and tourist information center, in a complex of pioneer houses, with an interesting display of original photographs and documents chronicling the colonys history. Its next to the towns Cooperativa.
Manzana de la Rivera
Just across the street from Palacio López is the Manzana de la Rivera, a complex of nine colorful and restored houses. The oldest is Casa Viola (1750), where the Museo Memoria de la Ciudad houses a history of Asuncións urban development.
