Paraguay's answer to the Vatican City, the enormous Basilica de Caacupé looks quite out of place in this otherwise quiet provincial town. Caacupé really comes alive on El Día de la Virgen (8 December) when crowds of worshipers undertake pilgrimages from all corners of the country to worship and ask the Virgin for favors.
As many as 300,000 of the faithful may crowd onto the plaza during the festival and participate in a spectacular candlelit procession.
Caacupé is 54km east of Asunción and Empresa Villa Serrana departs every 10 minutes from platform 35 on the ground floor of the Asunción terminal.
