Instituto Nacional de Cultura Museo
This small museum on the plaza houses mummies found throughout the region, plus ceramics from several pre-Columbian periods and one of the original sarcophagi from Karajía.

Asociación Museo del Automóvil
The Asociación Museo del Automóvil has an impressive array of classic cars dating back to 1901, from a Ford Model T to a Cadillac Fleetwood used by four Peruvian presidents.

Mirador de Carmen Alto
This mirador (lookout) offers fabulous views of Ayacucho, as well as decent restaurants. Taxis here charge S5, otherwise catch a bus from the Mercado Central or walk (one hour).

Cooperative Artesanal Don Baso
The Cooperative Artesanal Don Baso has a large workshop here where you can see adolescents busy creating superior-quality carvings, ceramics, sculptures, furniture and other crafts.

La Casa de Logia
La Casa de Logia, a block south of the main plaza, has a 67m-long, 400-year-old balcony, said to be the longest balcony in Peru. Most people visit here on an organized tour from Chiclayo.

Qente
Little-visited site just along the Inca Trail. (If you start from Km 88, turn west after crossing the river to see it – its about 1km away – then return east to Llactapata on the main trail.

Casa del Corregidor
An attraction in its own right, this 17th-century house is one of Puno’s oldest residences. A former community center, it now houses a small fair-trade arts-and-crafts store and a cafe.

Wiñay Wayna
An exquisite little Inca site along the Inca Trail; its name is variously translated as ‘Forever Young,’ ‘To Plant the Earth Young’ and ‘Growing Young’ (as opposed to ‘growing old’).

Museo Naval
The Museo Naval has a fascinating if tiny exhibit on navigating the lake, from rudimentary reed boats up to 19th-century steamers. The Spanish-speaking staff will show you around for a tip.

Paracas History Museum
Since most of the archaeological booty dug up nearby has been carted off to Lima, Paracas’ tiny museum is left with only a few scraps, the most striking of which are the elongated human skulls.

Museo del Sitio
A small archaeological museum opposite the church houses a collection heavy on broken pots. Admission is via the partial boleto turístico tourist ticket (valid for 2 days and for nearby ruins).

Aquatic Park
When temperatures are searing from January through to at least March, the beachside aquatic park opens alongside the sea, and beachfront discos stay thumping until the small hours of the morning.

Bodega Los Reyes
Close to town, Bodega Los Reyes is generous in its measures. It still allows visitors to get their feet wet – literally – treading grapes the traditional way during the months of February and March.

Museo de Arte Italiano
Just north of MALI, the Museo de Arte Italiano exhibits a tepid collection of 19th- and 20th-century Italian academic art. Its best attribute is the glittering Venetian mosaics on the exterior walls.

Pozuzo
The inexorably Germanic Pozuzo, four hours north of Oxapampa by daily minibus, is picturebook Tyrolean, from the architecture to the residents, straight out of a Grimms fairy tale (well almost).

Bosque El Olivar
This tranquil park, a veritable oasis in the middle of San Isidro, consists of the remnants of an old olive grove , part of which was planted by the venerated San Martín de Porres in the 17th century.

Mirador de Retaqeñua
Mirador de Retaqeñua is about a 45-minute walk southeast of the center and has great views of the city and its mountainous backdrop. It’s best to take a S15 taxi here as robberies have been reported on the trail.

Cerro de la Libertad
Head northeast on Giráldez for a great view of the city. About 2km from the town center is a popular recreational and dining locale where, apart from the city view, there are artwork stalls and a playground.

Royal Tomb
Below the Temple of the Sun, this almost hidden, natural rock cave was carefully carved by Inca stonemasons. Its use is highly debated; though known as the Royal Tomb, no mummies were actually ever found here.

Casa Museo Basadre
Named for a local historian born in 1903, this place is more convincing as a cultural center than a museum (though there’s a handful of old photos and exhibits). Check out the posters inside for upcoming music and art shows.
