Museo Torres Garcia

Museo Torres Garcia

Located in the Old Town of Montevideo, this museum focuses on quirky, abstract and cubist  portraits and paintings of historical icons. These include Beethoven, Da Vinci, Dostoyevsky and many others done by Torres Garcia. Known as the “Founder of Constructive Universalism”, Torres Garcia is a very famous Uruguayan artist who was born in Montevideo in 1874. The artist is very well-known for his mosaic painting which included primary colors and blocks. Sadly, much of his work was lost in a fire, which is one of the reasons why visiting this museum is so special.

Along with the exhibits, there is a temporary library on the ground floor of the building, and a theater in the basement. While technically a free museum, there is a suggested donation which you can choose to leave if you wish. The hours for visiting the museum are Monday through Friday, 10am to 7pm, Saturday 10am to 6pm and closed on Sundays. Moreover, they offer guided tours in English and Spanish on Saturdays from 11:30pm to 2pm.
