If you are on your way to the airport to board a flight, then the last thing that you will want to see when you reach the airport is a flashing red word next to your flight number - DELAYED. It is potentially the worst thing that could happen. This sudden news will without a doubt change your mood as the daunting thought of waiting in the airport for hours creeps into your realisation. Whether you are a large family who are about to jet off for your one holiday of the year or whether you are traveling alone on an important business trip, both face the harsh reality of the long, mundane wait in the case of a flight delay. However if the airline immediately offered you Airline Delays Compensation then you might not be so angry after all. Many people aren't aware that you could in fact be eligible to claim Airline Delays Compensation enabling you to claim large sums of money back due to a delayed or cancelled flight, especially if you are traveling in a group as each person is eligible to claim back.
There are many reasons to explain why airlines are not on schedule. It may be due to overbooking, technical or mechanical failures, staffing problems etc. Whatever the reason, if the airline is at fault then you are entitled to make a Flight Delay Claim in which the airline company is fully responsible to pay back compensation.
How to find out the reason for the delay?
Airlines have to submit on-time data along with abroad report of EU Flight Delays to the Bureau of Transportation Statistics (BTS). The reasons for the delay fall into five main categories specified by an Air Carrier On-Time Reporting Advisory Committee. Technically a flight is only counted as "on time" if the arrival or departure from the gate is within 15 minutes of the scheduled time.
The 5 common reasons why flights get delayed:
* Air carrier: if the cause of the delay or cancellation was due to circumstances within the airline's control. This could bedue to maintenance or crew problems, aircraft cleaning, fuelling, or the loading/unloading of baggage.
* Extreme weather: extreme meteorological conditions (actual or forecasted) that pose a threat to the operation of a flight such as a tornado, blizzard or hurricane may become a reason for a flight delay or cancellation.
* National Aviation System (NAS): whenever an order comes from NAS, the flights are not given permission to fly. This refers to a broad set of conditions such as non-extreme weather conditions (a forecasted storm, heavy rainfall or thick fog), heavy air traffic volume orair traffic control problems, meaning that no clear airways are available for the aircraft to fly.
* Security: if a possible threat is seen on an aircraft (or any parts of the aircraft), which may cause harm to passengers, than a full evacuation has to take place.Only after a full examination will the passengers be able to re-board and the aircraft is then given a signal to operate.
* Late arriving aircraft: if a previous flight using the same aircraft arrived late then it will also cause the present flight to depart late.
