Flying into and out of the biggest and busiest airport on the African continent, OR Tambo International in Johannesburg is air travel at its most serious, catering for up to 28 million passengers annually. Dedicated to the late Oliver Tambo, one of South Africa's national heroes who was an anti-apartheid activist and politician. Johannesburg flights go to a number of national and international destinations, since it's the home of the national carrier, South African Airways and a number of smaller airlines too.
If gigantic airports are not your forte then you should consider flying into Lanseria airport, also in Johannesburg. Located near the busy suburbs of Sandton, Randburg and the city of Pretoria - Lanseria has been operating since the 1970's, although back then it was mainly used for private planes. Having undergone a recent upgrade, Lanseria has become an excellent alternative airport for local and international travellers with all the luxuries of a big airport, just on a smaller scale.
All the low-cost airlines such as Mango, Kalula and 1Time use it fly into and out of this airport offering different flight schedules and slightly cheaper flights. Kulula and 1Time fly to Cape Town and Durban daily from Lanseria, while Mango offers three flights every day to Cape Town. Regional destinations are served by British Airways' Comair who have recently begun flying from Lanseria to Maputo and Gaborone.
So if you are heading to Johannesburg or if you are planning your trip to South Africa, keep in mind that Johannesburg flights offer you 2 departure points, one from OR Tambo and one from Lanseria - you should also be informed that it does take over an hour to get from one airport to another, so make sure you have enough time to get between the two if your itinerary calls for it.
