Although Bundeena is just 29 kilometres south of Sydney's CBD, as the crow flies, life there seems a million miles away from the big city. To the south of Port Hacking, it's surrounded by the bushland of the Royal National Park.
From the balcony of the Spot, it feels like you could cast a line into Port Hacking's blue-green waters, although the hook might get caught on the tall, shady pines. Accommodation consists of a large main bedroom with queen-sized bed and water views, plus two smaller bedrooms with double beds and a kids' room with a bunk bed. The light-filled dining-living space has a big table to gather family and friends around, and there are plenty of comfy corners to just chill out and soak up the calming vibes. Those looking for a little more action need only head downstairs to the rumpus room for a sudden-death game of pool or ping pong, or a jump on the trampoline in the grassy backyard.
Bush and/or beach lovers will find fun in Bundeena. You could head inland for a hike in the Royal National Park, which surrounds the village, but with the bay so close you're more likely to amble down to the beach for a dip in the protected waters, and perhaps a spot of snorkelling or beachcombing. Kayaks and paddleboards can be hired at the nearby Bonnie Vale Campground. The ferry to Cronulla departs on the hour.
Bundeena RSL is a stroll away. History buffs will enjoy its display of weapons, equipment and other memorabilia from World Wars I and II. There's passable pizza for the kids, or buy enough tickets for the Friday night meat tray and you can barbecue your winnings back at the Spot.
