If you’re short of cash ( and who isn’t?) there are ways and means of making your travel cheaper and even free. Most of us know about Woofing, CouchSurfing, house sitting and so on.
Well now there’s a new way and one that we’ve tried, yes us, a family. And it was incredibly good fun.
You probably know already that we loved our time in Romania so much we’ve actually bought a house there. That week was magic and an opportunity we’re so glad we took, all of us.

Working traveller is a new website that’s there to help us all find employment as we travel. Most of the jobs on the site ( and there are many, on every continent) offer free bed and board in exchange for your work. Paid employment is also possible in some instances.
Working Traveller is a great resource because, we, the travellers, can use our existing skills, everything from teaching, to acting to photography to building. Somebody, somewhere, wants your help.
Through the Working Traveller website people like you and I can build up a good reputation and collect good references from employers, as your good reputation grows, so does your employability. You could even take your Working Traveller references or resume to an employer in the “real” world, if your trip has to come to an end.

The kids had a ball! Playing in the stream at the hotel.
Obviously a resource like Working Traveller is far better suited to singles without kids in tow, but we did it, we tried Working Traveller as a family. It just so happened that my husband and I had separate skills that a particular employer needed, social media for me, chef and hotel skills for him. But what about the kids?
Nobody expected them to work for their keep, they were just having a good time and loved being “helpers”. Don’t worry, there was no child labour involved.What child doesn’t want to have a go at some painting? I was actually pleased that they got to have a go on somebody else’s furniture and I didn’t have to worry about the mess. Fair play to them, they did a good job!
We made this video during that week in Romania. This is the first time we’ve all appeared on video, you can probably see why, we’re rubbish on camera!
So not only did we help some people out with our skills, we learnt a lot from them too and that’s always a good thing.
