Glasgow has long been recognised as the younger, stylish sister of Edinburgh. Prices are lower here than in the capital but its abundance of restaurants have established Glasgow as one of Europe’s top foodie destinations. Below are my top five tried and tested Glasgow institutions, which are favourites of locals and visitors alike.
1. Gamba- Seafood, City Centre
The competition for Glasgow’s best seafood restaurant is fierce. However, the atmosphere and consistent quality at Gamba catapults it into first place.
The menu is updated every six weeks and Gamba pride themselves on sourcing the finest Scottish seafood. Their pre-theatre and Saturday lunch menu is great value at 16.95 for 2 courses and regular dishes include salmon teriyaki and baked sole thermidor.
2. Ubiquitos Chip – Modern Scottish, West End
The Chip has become a Glasgow icon by creating world class dishes inspired by traditional Scottish ingredients. The Brassiere menu is available in the bar and also the impressive roof terrace. It offers a more casual dining experience than the downstairs restaurant, but serves fantastic dishes at particularly reasonable prices. Haggis, lamb and fresh seafood frequent the restaurant menu.
The Chip also offers lots of themed nights throughout the year and a particular favourite is the ‘edible opera’. This involves a set five course dinner accompanied by a live operatic performance.
3. The Italian Kitchen – Italian, Merchant City
The Italian Kitchen is a hidden gem for Italian cuisine in Glasgow city centre. Often overshadowed by larger restaurants and chains in the city, the Italian Kitchen is yet to disappoint.
Their menu is simple but offers a great selection of high quality dishes and is a family favourite. Their interior is modern and welcoming and they are often fully booked over the weekend. They also offer a pre-theatre 3 course menu.
4. The Butchershop Bar & Grill – Steak, West End
Several large chains have opened steak houses within Glasgow, but the Glasgow-owned Butchershop is still recognised as one of the finest. Their mix of signature cocktails and fine, Scottish steaks have earned the Butchershop a glowing reputation.
Their foodie favourite ‘Steak Frites Tuesday’ has recently changed to ‘Burger vs. Steak Tuesday’ which offers the choice of two Butchershop burgers or two aged rump steaks, accompanied by a bottle of house wine, for just 30.
5. Mother India – Indian, City Centre
There is a huge abundance of great Indian restaurants in Glasgow; however, Mother India stands out as world class. The staff are amongst the friendliest you will encounter and their food is always top quality. They also offer several healthy alternatives; a novelty for Indian cuisine.
Their slow cooked chicken curries are a personal favourite and their choice of accompaniments is particularly impressive. Weekend tables fill up fast; so it’s best to book in advance. Their sister restaurant, Mother India Caf offers a tapas style menu and is ideal for those of us who struggle to choose!
