Southeast Asia is one of the few regions in the world that appeals to travellers at both ends of the budget scale. And while these countries often attract a backpacker crowd, they also serve equally well those looking for all out luxury. But what if you’re looking for a little bit of indulgence away from the masses? Well, you’ll be pleased to hear there are plenty of luxury hideaways dotted throughout Southeast Asia as well.
Kura Kura Resort, Indonesia
The only hotel situated on the remote island of Pulau Menyawakan in Indonesia, you would be forgiven for thinking Kura Kura Resort would offer little in the way of luxury, but this couldn’t be further from the truth. Each of its 21 pool villas have private 4×8 metre pools and air-conditioned bedrooms, while the property’s restaurant serves up fantastic fare, from Mediterranean dishes to classic Indonesian cuisine.
A real desert island experience, this is a great spot for diving and snorkelling enthusiasts with the warm and clear waters that surround the island teeming with marine life, while those who prefer dry land adventures can spend a day or two exploring lush jungle.
Soneva Kiri, Koh Kood, Thailand
The Soneva Group is synonymous with luxury, so it’s no surprise Soneva Kiri on the island of Koh Kood has made this list. Begin your stay in style with a light aircraft flight and speedboat to reach the property, before exploring the whopping 41 acres which includes 42 pool villas and an eco-suite, three restaurants, a world-renowned spa, PADI dive centre and boutique shops. For the more active visitors, there are plenty of opportunities to take part in water-based activities, fishing tours and walking trails.
Song Saa, Cambodia
The small islands of Koh Ouen and Koh Bong in the unspoilt Koh Rong archipelago off the south coast of Cambodia are home to Song Saa, a luxury property with a commitment to marine conservation. These islands, rather endearingly dubbed ‘The Sweethearts’, are joined by a footbridge: one island houses the property’s over water villas while the other has been left untouched.
After a day taking part in one or two of the activities and excursions on offer, you can refuel with some tasty fodder served in the property’s over water restaurant, or pop down to the beach bar if fancy something a little stronger.
Six Senses Con Dao, Vietnam
If you’re looking for hidden luxury in Vietnam, you can’t go far wrong with Six Senses in Con Dao. With a number of design awards under its belt it’s not just the property that is aesthetically pleasing, the breath-taking views of the South China Sea aren’t to be sniffed at either.
Whether you want to indulge your appetite for gastronomic delights in the bakery and beachside restaurant, or while away a few hours in the relaxing spa, this property caters for families and couples alike.
Amanjiwo, Yogyakarta, Java, Indonesia
If Six Senses Con Dao is the king of cuisine, then Amanjiwo wins the award for location. Deep in the heart of Central Java this luxury property is surrounded by volcanoes, paddy fields and small villages. Its biggest draw, however, is that it overlooks one of the most important Buddhist sights in the world: the Borobudur Temple.
If you get bored admiring the views (not likely!) you can always take a dip in the property’s 40-metre infinity pool. This property exudes opulence and is one of my favourites in all of Southeast Asia.
Amanpulo, the Philippines
A private island resort just an hour’s flight away from Manila, Amanpulo is considered the most exclusive resort in the Philippines. Ultimate seclusion and luxury combine to create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere, where most will want to spend time on the white sandy beaches and in turquoise seas.
Traditionally decorated casitas (little houses) are peppered throughout the grounds, each with a king size bed and marble bathrooms with raised bathtubs. Each room also has use of a golf cart to explore further, which comes in handy given the size of the of the island!
Fusion Maia, Danang, Vietnam
Just a stone’s throw away from Hoi An you will find the beautiful white sands of My Khe Beach. It is here that guests can spend a night or two at Fusion Maia, a luxurious resort with 87 suites and villas, private pool and three restaurants which serve up a wide-range of delectable dishes, from all day tapas to afternoon tea. What’s more, all of Fusion Maia’s spa services are included in your stay so you’d be mad not to indulge in a little “me time”.
Six Senses Ninh Van Bay, Nha Trang, Vietnam
The only way to access Six Senses Nimh Van Bay is by boat, instantly giving you that hideaway feel. The sense of solitude extends further as you explore your surroundings; soaring mountains, pristine beaches and rocky coastline are yours to enjoy.
With each of the 39 beach pool villas enjoying their own private plunge pool and direct access to the beach there is a distinctly luxurious feel to the property, but with a key focus on the environment your stay will be guilt-free.
Four Seasons, Langkawi, Malaysia
One of the finest beach hotels in Southeast Asia, the Four Seasons Langkawi is situated on Tanjung Rhu, one of the most beautiful but also quiet stretches of white sand in the north of the island.
Traditional style and modern conveniences blend seamlessly to create a luxurious and convenient stay, and despite its exclusive feel the Four Seasons Langkawi is happy to welcome children, making it a great choice for a luxury family holiday.
Gaya Island Resort, Kota Kinabalu, Borneo
The Tunku Abdul Rahman Park in Borneo is an off-the-beaten-track destination made up of five small islands, the largest of which, Pulau Gaya, is home to the Gaya Island Resort. There are a number of different accommodation options here, but for those looking for all out luxury spend a night or two in the property’s Suria suite – once you take a dip in your outdoor bath overlooking Mount Kinabalu you’ll never want to return home.
