Fresh from a slick makeover, the hotel is slap bang in the middle of Melbourne's busy Flinders Street. Many of the city's icons such as the quirky laneways, restaurants, bars, shops and South Bank's vibrant arts and entertainment area are a short stride away. If you need to catch a suburban train, Flinders Street Station is on your door step.
DoubleTree by Hilton has given its first Melbourne property, the former hotel Citigate Melbourne, a multi-million dollar facelift to create a boutique style hotel with an industrial urban vibe featuring exposed ceilings, timber floors and aged concrete walls. There are 180-guest rooms, a reception area that extends into a long cocktail bar with towering wine racks and in a nod to its near neighbour, a restaurant named Platform 270. There's also access to a 24-hour gym.
The interior design has been inspired by Melbourne's laneways and Flinders Street Station that was the first railway station in Australia. Everything from the black-and-white photography of Melbourne's familiar cityscape to the upholstery, carpets, curved headboards and bathroom sinks have been custom made and reflect a touch of train travel. Our king room with historic views on a top floor features the signature Sweet Dream bed, desk, gourmet tea and coffee choices and Aroma Actives bathroom products. The bathroom "subway" tiles and industrial sink evoke memories of the "ladies" at modern European train stations. The laser cut bedhead design is a modern take on opening train carriage curtains. A fabulous bird's eye view of Flinders Street Station with its historic clock tower sees these rooms booked well ahead for the city's White Night and New Year celebrations. The room was surprisingly quiet despite the busy street.
I am seduced by the warm chocolate chip cookie at check-in, which is a DoubleTree by Hilton tradition, and the comfortable bed. There's something a little whimsical about the vibe of the hotel and the train connection and there's definitely a buzz in the lobby bar/check-in counter.
A rum-based Evening Express cocktail seems an appropriate choice in the lobby bar before heading to Platform 270 with its open kitchen. All-day dining is available with small, medium and large plates depending on your appetite. The house cured molasses salmon with celeriac remoulade and beetroot and caper berries proves a good choice, followed by blackened butterflied quail, risoni pasta, sour cream, chives and a sweet finale of sorbets. The wine list features both Australian and international drops. Breakfast offers lots of selections, both healthy and hearty.
If you appreciate automobiles and style, head to the National Gallery of Victoria's Shifting Gear: Design, Innovation and the Australian Car exhibition that showcases some of the most iconic vehicles as objects of art and design (until July 15). Pack your runners and take a walk along the Yarra or if you are feeling energetic do the iconic Tan Track around King's Domain and the Botanic Gardens.
Perfect for those after a city vibe with killer views over Flinders Street Station. A trainspotters' haven.
