Wattle Point is a four-hour drive from Melbourne on the shores of the picturesque Lake Victoria in East Gippsland. About 20 minutes from Bairnsdale, it is surrounded by national parks, home to a healthy flock of black swans and abounds with kangaroos.
The secluded retreat is sprawled across eight hectares of banksia, eucalyptus and wattle-tree bushland. There are 19 lodges; each has access to a private jetty and many have incredible views of Lake Victoria. The spacious apartments are self-contained, with large windows opening onto a verandah with barbecue. Tarra Lodge could easily accommodate an entire family with its two bedrooms, plus a loft with extra sleeping space. Visitors can use the communal pool, outdoor spa, kayaks and pushbikes (though the latter aren't too flash).
Wildlife lovers and international guests will adore this place. Kangaroos hop right up to the back door, while rosellas and other birds dart through the air. Be warned: it can turn cold very suddenly here, no matter the season, so make sure to bring some warm clothes and take advantage of the wood heater if necessary. Adventurers can fish, explore the Gippsland Lakes by canoe, or bushwalk through the ancient banksia trees. Paynesville, with its village charm, is only a short drive away.
Feeding the 'roos, watching the sunset on the retreat's piers, and buying fish and chips in Paynesville. Check out the Paynesville Community Craft Centre and stock up on Raymond Island honey, knitted bed socks and homemade jams and preserves.
Cost: From $420 for a one-bedroom loft for the weekend.
